Rent a Foundry server: build your factory together

If you want to rent a Foundry server, choose your plan based on your factory and how your group plays. A new world to try out has different demands on management and backups than a long-term building project. First clarify who will look after the server, which world you want to use and whether your existing game should be carried over.

Foundry offers its own dedicated server software. For a private session, the access password and the chosen world are especially important. Ask the host whether these settings are accessible in the panel or managed via the configuration. The official documentation uses app.cfg for this. An easy-to-use panel is helpful, but it should not make later access to the world and backups harder.

Coordinate factory run, saves and world choice

An important Foundry setting controls whether the server pauses once nobody is connected. Agree within your group which behavior suits your project, and ask to be shown the corresponding setting. Don’t confuse a permanently reachable server address with a statement about whether the simulation keeps running while you’re away. The actual configuration is what counts.

Automatic saving and a separate backup are also different features. Foundry lets you set the autosave interval. For larger rebuilds, a restorable state that you keep independently of the running game is also recommended. Clarify whether the provider offers full world files for download and how an import is checked. A world name or seed alone does not contain your already built factory.

Align performance and host change with your building project

Don’t compare just the bookable player count. Tell the host how far your factory has been expanded, and ask about resources, diagnostic options and a later plan change. Specifically named CPU allocation and RAM help with assessment. If this data is missing, ask whether the server suits your world rather than assuming sufficient computing power from a large slot package.

Before a move, make sure where the host stores the world data and how you can export it completely. Keep the original backup and test the new installation with your group before you keep building. Also plan game and server updates together. Finally, compare the total due, the renewal and included backups. For an ongoing factory project, controllable changes and a traceable restore path count as much as the entry price.

Frequently asked questions about FOUNDRY Game Server

Does our Foundry factory keep running when nobody is connected?

That depends on pause_server_when_empty. The option determines whether an empty server pauses. Check the active setting with the host, rather than inferring a running simulation from the server being always reachable.

Is the seed enough to take over our Foundry factory?

No. The seed describes how a world is generated and does not contain your built facilities. For a move you need the actual save files. Ask to be shown the matching export and import route for your installation.

Is Foundry's autosave already a complete backup?

Autosave saves the current state at an adjustable interval. For independent restoration, you should also back up the full world data and keep it outside the running server. Check the provider's retention and restore process.

How does our group join the Foundry Dedicated Server?

The official guide describes a direct connection via IP address and port. Publicly listed servers are also reachable through the Steam server browser. Ask for the connection details and, if you run into problems, check whether the game and server use the same version.
