IDEA: a light bulb on a journey
In IDEA you send a small white light bulb on a journey through real landscapes. Instead of drawn levels, you see roads, fields, houses and crossroads from a bird’s-eye view. The scenery was recorded in 4K by filmmaker Olli Huttunen with a drone. You watch your idea roll through the images and bounce off obstacles.
Explore, nudge and share thoughts
The light bulb mostly follows the paths on its own. If it gets caught on a railing, tree or building, you may help it a limited amount per frame. When the accompanying music ends, it is decided whether it reaches its goal. Not every journey succeeds, but a failed attempt can leave a message at the point it reached: a thought, a verse or a short idea that other players can later discover and save. The messages create a quiet connection between the otherwise solo play sessions.
IDEA is less a classic puzzle game with fixed solutions than a calm mix of physics experiment, exploration and interactive art. It is based on the short film of the same name by Olli Huttunen. The game comes from TLR Games, a studio behind The Longest Road on Earth.
IDEA on Android
The Android version was released on June 29, 2023, according to the published press kit. Google Play lists it as a paid puzzle app with the ID com.tlrgames.idea and the age rating “Everyone”. In the mobile version you guide the light bulb through filmed environments by touch and can discover other users’ ideas. Android is a separate store purchase, not the PC version or a Nintendo code.
