A Valley Without Wind: free exploration in a constantly changing world
A Valley Without Wind is an unusual 2D action adventure from Arcen Games that combines platformer combat, magic, exploration and building a small settlement. You travel through the procedurally generated world of Environ, look for allies and try to overthrow an overpowering ruler. Rather than a rigid sequence of levels, your own route determines which dangers and tasks you tackle first.
Spells, loot and settlement building
In the side-scrolling areas you fight creatures with various spells and collect equipment and materials. Your character’s abilities can be combined to open new paths or defeat stronger enemies. At the same time, you rescue survivors and help build a settlement. Rescued residents take on tasks and go on expeditions, while you continue exploring the map.
The world evolves as you progress: new continents and more dangerous enemies keep the game fresh. If your current character dies, they are lost for good, but part of the progress you made is kept. You can play alone or cross the vast areas together with others.
What sets the first part apart from the second?
The first part focuses mainly on an extensive sandbox with free exploration and crafting. A Valley Without Wind 2, by contrast, follows a more structured campaign and combines platformer sections with a turn-based strategy map. Arcen Games offers both standalone games as a joint PC bundle.
PC version and language
The original was released on Apr 24, 2012 for PC. Steam offers it for Windows, macOS and Linux with an English interface. The historical Mac requirements date from before macOS Catalina; current Apple systems cannot run the old 32-bit version without difficulty.
