Prey (2006) is a standalone science fiction first-person shooter by Human Head Studios. Mechanic Tommy Tawodi is abducted together with his girlfriend Jen and his grandfather by an alien spaceship. On the biomechanical Sphere, he has to defend himself against cruel inhabitants and find out how to get back home.
Portals, walking gravity and ghostly powers
Long before modern portal shooters, Prey plays with impossible architecture: you run along walls and ceilings, shoot through portals into other areas and fight in rooms whose gravity can be switched. With the Spirit Walk ability, Tommy can leave his body and get past obstacles. Alongside the single-player campaign there is a classic competitive multiplayer mode, for which additional free maps and characters were released in October 2006.
The original from 2006
The Windows PC version was released in Europe in July 2006. The game uses an adapted id Tech 4 engine and was later also distributed via Steam; the Steam app has the ID 3970. The game must be distinguished from Prey (2017) by Arkane Studios: despite the identical name, the story, characters, developers and game concept are different. The originally released Collector’s Edition contained physical extras, but no second standalone PC title.
