Sportsfriends is a local party game collection for the PlayStation 3. Four standalone competitive ideas make for short matches, where two to four people challenge each other. The original European launch was on May 7, 2014; since May 29, 2024, the game has reportedly been offered for free by the developer.
BaraBariBall, Hokra, Super Pole Riders and Johann Sebastian Joust
In BaraBariBall, players fight for the ball and the opponent’s goal in a pixelated arena. Hokra focuses on fast, minimalist passing in teams, while Super Pole Riders combines sticks and physics for wild ball duels. Johann Sebastian Joust makes the movement of the controllers the game itself: you try to throw opponents off balance without jerking your own controller.
Controllers and local player count
On PlayStation 3, all four games can be played with DualShock controllers; PlayStation Move optionally extends the motion game Johann Sebastian Joust. According to the developer, the PS3 version supports up to seven controllers for Joust, which makes it especially suited to larger groups. An online mode is not the focus: Sportsfriends is designed for playing together in person.
Download and release
The PlayStation version was originally released in Europe on May 7, 2014. The German PlayStation Store page now lists a free PS4 cross-buy licence which, according to the store, also gives access to the PS3 version. For the historical PS3 version, access via the older PlayStation ecosystem may differ. This is not a separately newly developed PS5 release.
