Ato is a 2D Metroidvania with elaborately animated pixel art about a former swordsman who must rescue his kidnapped child in a world inspired by feudal Japan. The father had turned his back on his former clan to live peacefully with his family. When his past catches up with him, he explores a mysterious world full of dangerous enemies and hidden paths. The story almost entirely does without words and relies on gestures, animation and music.
Precise sword duels instead of button mashing
Every enemy encounter is its own challenge: you watch attack patterns, dodge, parry at the right moment and use your opponent’s movements against them. Boss fights in particular demand focus and good timing. Different difficulty levels – from a supportive option to the demanding expert mode – make the combat system accessible to different players.
Exploration, new abilities and pixel art
Beyond the battles, you discover interconnected areas, solve environmental puzzles and unlock abilities that open previously unreachable paths. The fluid pixel animations and the soundtrack with flutes, drums and calm passages emphasize the interplay between peaceful landscapes and dangerous duels. Ato is a single-player experience; the story needs neither voice acting nor long dialogue.
PlayStation 4 version
The PlayStation 4 version was released on the German PlayStation Store on April 10, 2024. It is offline and single-player only, supports Remote Play and DualShock 4 vibration, and has German-language menus. On PS5, the PS4 version can be played via backward compatibility; a native PS5 release is not listed in the store.
