The Shapeshifting Detective is an interactive crime story in the style of supernatural film noir. Instead of animated characters, you experience the events in real filmed scenes with actors. As the mysterious investigator Sam, you come to the town of August to solve the death of young cellist Dorota Shaw. Three tarot readers who supposedly foresaw a murder are under suspicion.

Investigating with borrowed faces

Sam has an unusual gift: he can take on the appearance of people he has met. This lets him question witnesses who would distrust an ordinary detective. Up to nine transformations open alternative conversations and change the view of the suspects. More than 1,600 recorded video responses, nested dialogue choices and a mechanism for dropping certain questions ensure that the investigation depends on your decisions.

Who was the murderer?

At the start of each playthrough, the identity of the culprit is chosen from several possibilities. It is therefore worth recombining clues, taking different conversation paths and playing the story several times. Between interrogations, the fictional radio station Radio August provides short stories and atmosphere. The pure single-player adventure relies on observation, deduction and the portrayal of real actors, not on combat or an open-world sandbox mode.

The standalone PS5 version

After the original PS4 release, the film noir mystery received a native PlayStation 5 edition on Jan 22, 2024. Sony lists the PS5 product code EP4459-PPSA18833_00-SHAPESHIFTINGPS5 for it. The PlayStation Store sometimes bundles PS4 and PS5 access in its offering, but the native game versions that are actually available remain different platform versions. The German-language Sony Store confirms English voice audio and twelve PS5 on-screen languages including German, as well as an offline single-player mode and Remote Play. A PS4 disc or simple backward compatibility does not explain the separate PPSA18833 release.
