What is A Building Full of Cats?

A Building Full of Cats is a hand-drawn hidden object game in which you find and pet the cats of an apartment building. Developer Devcats hides the animals in densely illustrated rooms across several floors. The residents are away, and as a cat sitter you look after the four-legged pets they left behind.

The game is designed for relaxed observation rather than time pressure. Many cats sit openly between furniture and plants, while others hide behind objects or in small details of the drawings.

Platforms

The hidden object game is out for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Xbox One. On PC you can choose Windows or Linux. The Xbox One version can also be played on Xbox Series X|S, but this does not make it a separate Xbox Series release. Likewise, the Switch version is compatible with Switch 2, but it is not a native Switch 2 game.

The September 2026 remake is so far part of the PC version. Devcats has not released the revised console versions.

Gameplay

The task is simple: find every cat in the hand-drawn rooms and click on it. You search furniture, windows, plants, shelves and decorations until even the shy animals are found. The gameplay combines a picture puzzle with the progress of a manageable collection task.

The image itself is the most important clue. A calm, careful search is worth more than quick clicking, because some cats blend in with patterns and objects.

System requirements

On PC, A Building Full of Cats needs very little hardware power. For Windows, Steam lists a 64-bit processor, 1 GB RAM, 512 MB graphics memory and 100 MB of free storage. Windows 7 is listed as the original minimum version. However, the current Steam client only supports newer Windows versions.

For Linux, Devcats lists a 64-bit system with X11 support, a processor from 1.3 GHz and the same memory values. The requirements refer to the details on the Steam product page.

The details apply to PC.

Rooms and floors

The cats are spread across several floors and numerous hand-drawn rooms. Each floor shows different furnishings and new hiding spots. According to Devcats, the original on PC includes more than 360 cats, across six floors and at least 60 especially hidden animals.

The older console descriptions, by contrast, mention more than 300 cats across over five floors. The numbers differ by version and were increased further with the PC remake.

Hidden cats and Fofiño

Not all cats are immediately easy to spot. Besides the openly visible animals, the house contains additional particularly well-camouflaged cats. Anyone who wants to find everything must search the rooms carefully and also pay attention to small details.

Fofiño plays a special role in full completion. In the remake, the search only ends once all cats and Fofiño are found. This makes the finale, which was previously easy to miss, more noticeable.

Remake from 2026

Since Sept 17, 2026, the revised game has been included on Steam at no extra cost. Devcats not only increased the resolution of the apartments but also redesigned numerous rooms and hid more than 20 additional cats per apartment.

Every room now has its own counter, while the original version used a shared counter for two rooms. The remake also supports additional screen resolutions and a clearer ending with Fofiño. The console versions don't include this revision yet.

Classic and Remake compared

On Steam, both PC versions can be launched separately. A Building Full of Cats Classic preserves the 2022 game with its original design and its gameplay at the time. Remake focuses on reworked rooms, additional hiding spots and a modernized technical base.

The original is based on Godot 2, the new version on Godot 4. At startup, you can choose between both versions, so no older save or favorite room has to be replaced by the remake.

Controls and game mode

An online matchmaking or cooperative multiplayer mode is not part of the game.

Achievements and progress

On Steam, you can complete the cat search with achievements. Classic and Remake largely use the same achievements, but the adoption of Fofiño has its own achievement in both versions.

Steam also supports cloud saves. On consoles, the respective save systems and trophies or achievements of the platform apply.

Hand-drawn game world

The house consists of detailed two-dimensional illustrations. Many different furniture pieces, patterns, plants and small decorations make sure not every cat is spotted at first glance. The style focuses on calm, friendly images rather than frantic animation.

In the remake, the rooms have been extensively redrawn. This also changes some search routes, without giving up the original's basic principle.
