What is Afterworld?

Afterworld is a grand strategy game by Paradox Development Studio, the team behind Crusader Kings III and Hearts of Iron IV. Instead of historical states, the focus is on its own post-apocalyptic version of North America.

The start is deliberately small: a group of survivors leaves a failing bunker, for example, or sets out from a different origin into the wasteland. From early settlements, scarce supplies and local decisions, a political entity gradually grows that fights over territories, resources and the future of the continent.

Gameplay

Afterworld combines survival, settlement building and grand strategy. Food, water and fuel first determine how far a small group can spread. Later, supply lines, convoys, laws, alliances and wars emerge between growing societies.

The map is based on a recognizable North America, but procedurally reshuffles resources, groups and dangers. A dynamic idea tree reacts to discoveries: rivers can, for example, unlock irrigation, and encounters with other groups can give rise to new social concepts.

Society, laws and decisions

Building a society is a strategic focus in its own right. Among other things, players decide how scarce goods are distributed, who gets a political voice and which values shape the emerging realm.

Crises and new discoveries change the population's expectations. Decisions can have effects across generations, ranging from supply crises to political breakdowns.

The world and the Ancients

In Afterworld, the old world exists only in ruins and technological relics. Especially powerful remnants can fundamentally change what a society is capable of.

The Ancients play a central role: figures kept alive by lost technology, from the time before the collapse. They pursue their own ideas about how the new world should be ruled, and can become long-term political rivals.
