What is Among Us?

Among Us is a social deduction party game by Innersloth in which four to 15 people play a round together. Most receive the role of a Crewmate and are meant to complete tasks together. A smaller, hidden group plays as Impostors and tries to eliminate the crew without being noticed.

Observation, deception and conversation are key: after a reported body or an emergency meeting, everyone discusses suspicions and votes on a possible impostor. Nobody knows for sure whom the others can trust. The game works online and over local Wi-Fi, and is explicitly not an ordinary single-player adventure.

Release

Innersloth first released Among Us on Jun 15, 2018 on Android and iOS. The PC version came out on Steam on Nov 16, 2018. The Nintendo Switch version followed on Dec 15, 2020. Since Dec 14, 2021, there have been native versions for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.

After launch, the base game was expanded with maps, special roles and the Hide n Seek mode, among other things. These elements are lasting game content, not separate re-releases of the base product.

Platforms

Among Us was released natively for PC (Windows), Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The PC version is offered via Steam and Epic Games, among others. Players on these platforms can join shared online lobbies, provided they use a compatible current game version.

A Switch version running on Switch 2 is therefore not automatically a native Switch 2 version. Among Us 3D is also a separate game and not simply a graphics mode of this 2D version.

Gameplay

The crew moves through a map, works through task lists and tries to spot dead crewmates or suspicious actions in time. Crewmates win when the tasks are completed or all Impostors have been voted out. Cameras, the admin map and other players' information help in finding contradictions.

Impostors can fake tasks, close doors, trigger sabotage, move through vents and eliminate crewmates. Their advantage is that they cannot be recognised as opponents from the outside. Anyone who accuses too quickly or trusts a convincing alibi can weaken their own side.

Classic and Hide n Seek

In classic mode, discussion followed by a vote is one of the crew's most important tools. Host settings change, for example, the number of tasks, movement speed, impostor count and the available special roles.

Hide n Seek is a standalone mode, available since Dec 2022: one Impostor hunts the crew, while completed tasks shorten the remaining timer. A danger indicator shows how close the hunter is. Here, direct pursuit is the focus, not the shared unmasking in meetings.

Special roles change the suspicion

In addition to regular Crewmates and Impostors, there are roles that can be activated. An Engineer can use vents, a Scientist can check vitals and a Shapeshifter takes on the appearance of other crewmates. A Guardian Angel can protect surviving crewmates as a ghost.

Further game variants are added with Tracker (temporary position tracking), Noisemaker (signal after an elimination) and Phantom (temporary invisibility). Innersloth later added, among others, Detective, Viper, Judge and, in Sep 2026, the ghost crewmate Influencer. Which roles actually appear depends on the lobby settings.

Maps and spatial decisions

The fixed locations include the spaceship The Skeld, the complex MIRA HQ, the research station Polus, the airship The Airship and the island map The Fungle. Paths, sightlines, rooms and tasks are distributed differently depending on the location, which changes how you look for believable alibis.

The Fungle was added on Oct 24, 2023. The island brings beaches, mushroom forests, cliffs and its own tasks and sabotage conditions. A map is therefore not just scenery, but affects where the crew meets and who seems suspicious.

Chat, accounts and parental controls

Rounds depend on players sharing observations. Among Us offers free text chat and Quick Chat with preset phrases for this. According to Innersloth's help pages, the choice of chat mode depends on the signed-in account and, where applicable, parental approval.

Players who play as a guest or lack required consent may be limited to Quick Chat. An existing account is therefore relevant not only for cosmetic settings, but also affects how you can communicate during meetings.

Cosmetics and additional content

Colours, hats, visors, skins and pets change the appearance of your character. There are also cosmetic collections called Cosmicubes that unlock additional items. The core tasks, votes and roles remain separate from these.

On PC, individual cosmetic DLC packs were also released. They are not standalone games and do not change the native platform releases of Among Us.

Development and structure of the game

Innersloth developed and published Among Us. The original PC version came out in 2018 as a compact party game, whose rules work mainly through the different behaviour of the people at the screen. Later permanent expansions such as new maps, roles and game modes widened the possible matches without abandoning the core principle of crew versus impostors.

The simple graphic style allows shared rounds on mobile devices, computers and several console generations. That makes platform choice, reliable communication and lobby settings more important than a specific campaign or a classic ending.

Game series

Among Us 3D is a standalone multiplayer game with a different perspective, which grew out of the earlier VR spin-off. It is not a 3D mode for the original Among Us that can be added for free, and it does not share its regular lobbies.

With Among Us Story: On Guard, Innersloth is also developing a separate detective and story game for single players. It is about solving cases in a MIRA training simulation rather than the social deduction of a multiplayer match.
