What is Apex Legends?
Apex Legends is a free-to-play hero shooter from Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts. The game combines Battle Royale with a roster of so-called Legends, each with their own active and passive abilities. Rather than relying only on one-on-one duels, the combat system is built heavily around role distribution, movement and teamwork within the squad.
Apex Legends is set in the Titanfall universe, but it continues its world as a standalone live-service series. Since its surprise launch in 2019, the game has been continuously expanded with new Legends, maps, weapons, modes and seasonal systems.

Gameplay
In the classic Battle Royale, up to 60 players compete against each other. Before the match, each squad picks Legends with different abilities and combines their strengths. Weapons, attachments and healing items are collected on the map, while the ring gradually shrinks the play area.
Defining systems include Respawn beacons for eliminated teammates, the context-sensitive ping system and the strong role synergy between Legends. Alongside Battle Royale, Apex Legends offers Ranked play, time-limited modes and other rotating variants. Maps and balance are regularly reworked within the ongoing live service.

DLCs and expansions
Apex Legends does not follow a classic expansion model with large paid DLC for the base game. Instead, Respawn delivers new content through seasons, events and ongoing updates. This includes new or reworked Legends, weapons, map changes, time-limited modes and cosmetic content.
The base game remains free to play. Additional purchases mainly concern seasonal and cosmetic content; the major gameplay updates are rolled out as part of the live service.

Anti-cheat: EA Javelin on PC
Since September 29, 2026, the PC version of Apex Legends uses EA Javelin Anticheat instead of Easy Anti-Cheat. The migration happens automatically with the game update; for Apex Legends, EA currently does not require Secure Boot to be enabled in the BIOS.
On consoles, EA in parallel relies on specialized data models and server-side detection methods for platform-specific cheats. Anti-cheat development, telemetry and data analysis are thereby bundled more closely within EA’s own security infrastructure.

Game series
Apex Legends began as a new spin-off within the Titanfall universe. Respawn took elements of the science-fiction world and developed from them a standalone series centred on the Apex Games, the Outlands and the growing roster of Legends. The story continues through in-game events, animations and seasonal content.
