What is Aragami?

Aragami is a third-person stealth game from Spanish studio Lince Works. The captive Yamiko summons an undead assassin who must infiltrate the fortress city of Kyuryu, occupied by the Army of Light. The focus is on Yamiko, the origins of the summoned warrior and a conflict whose story unfolds gradually.

The game relies less on direct combat than on carefully planned routes through guarded areas. Its defining feature is mastery of darkness: shadows serve at once as cover, a means of travel and a source of supernatural abilities.

Release

10 years agoSource: Steam

The first release came on Oct 4, 2016 for PC and PlayStation 4. The native Xbox One version followed on Jun 5, 2018. The Nintendo Switch version launched in February 2019 as Aragami: Shadow Edition; the digital store launch is documented for Feb 21, while the retail release was announced for Feb 22.

Shadow Edition is not a standalone sequel. It bundles the base game and the story expansion Nightfall. A new standalone release for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series does not follow from older console versions being playable.

Platforms

Standalone versions are available for PC (Windows, macOS, Linux), PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. Steam lists the PC title for macOS and Linux too, which count as part of the PC version. On Switch the game is offered as the Shadow Edition. The Xbox One version is an Xbox One product, not a separate Xbox Series release.

What additional content a purchase includes depends on the edition: the base game and the bundle with Nightfall are listed differently across stores.

Gameplay

Aragami can teleport from one shadow to the next, create extra darkness and sneak past enemies unnoticed. Other techniques allow invisibility, silent attacks or summoning supernatural powers. Lit areas and patrolling guards force you to assess angles and routes.

The mission areas have alternative routes. Instead of taking out every enemy, you can complete a mission while attracting as little attention as possible. The challenge comes from observation, timing and deciding which shadow ability is useful for the next section.

DLCs and expansions

Aragami: Nightfall came out on Jun 5, 2018 as a standalone story expansion for the base game. Its story takes place before Aragami. Across four chapters, players guide Hyo or Shinobu through new locations and learn three additional shadow techniques. On Steam, the DLC requires the base game.

The Shadow Edition includes the base game together with Nightfall and previously released extra content. It should therefore be distinguished as a bundle from the separately sold story expansion.

Co-op, editor and language version

According to Steam, Aragami has an online co-op mode and cross-platform multiplayer features. The developer confirmed at the original PlayStation 4 release that the campaign can also be played together. A local split-screen mode is therefore not confirmed.

The Steam version also lists Steam Workshop and a level editor. German interface text and subtitles are listed; the store does not list German voice-over.

Game series

Lince Works developed and published the original and later Aragami 2. In March 2023 the studio announced it would stop developing new projects from April indefinitely. It also said both Aragami games would stay on sale and their online co-op features would remain accessible.

This statement describes the studio's assurance at the time, not a permanent guarantee that all online services will remain reachable. The first Aragami remains a self-contained stealth game with its own campaign.
