What is Ashes of the Singularity II?

Ashes of the Singularity II is a science-fiction real-time strategy game from Oxide Games and Stardock Entertainment. The sequel to Ashes of the Singularity, released in 2016, features thousands of units, huge battlefields and a conflict between humans, post-humans and an independent artificial machine civilization.

According to the developer and publisher, the focus is on strategic planning, supply and large formations working together rather than frantic individual control. The game has not been released yet; the features described are so far only announcements.

Gameplay

On continent-sized maps, formations with thousands of units clash. According to Steam and Stardock, terrain, production, supply lines and careful troop movements decide how a battle turns out. The focus is on large forces working together, not on as many inputs per second as possible.

With Strategic Zoom, players can switch between the big picture and the front line without losing track of the operational situation.

Humans, Post-Humans and machines

The United Earth Forces represent the nations of Earth and, despite technological disadvantages, rely on large conventional armies. The Post-Human Coalition consists of humans who have overcome their biological existence. The AI Substrate forms a machine civilisation independent of them.

Each of these three sides is meant to have its own units and strategic options. In free battles and multiplayer, all factions are playable.

Campaign from humanity's perspective

The announced single-player campaign follows the United Earth Forces as they try to reclaim areas of the solar system from Post-Humans and AI. The historical background of the fictional conflict goes back to a time when technological developments shifted power between humans, machines and Post-Humans.

A free battle mode against computer-controlled opponents is also planned, which should be playable independently of the story.

Online co-op and competitive battles

Steam lists both online co-op and online PvP. Stardock confirms the option to fight battles together or against each other. In addition, there are single-player battles and the campaign.

A binding number of players taking part at the same time does not appear in the official documents reviewed here; it is therefore not estimated.

Terrain as part of the strategy

According to the developers, the war zones span large landmasses. Buildings and landscapes change during combat, including through the conversion of areas into the fictional substance Turinium. Chokepoints, ridges and other terrain features are meant to influence strategic decisions.

Stardock cites frozen lakes, mountain passes and lava fields as examples of battlefields with different characteristics.

Planned editions and additional content

Stardock announces a Premium Edition alongside the standard game, which is set to include the soundtrack and the first three planned DLC packs. The exact contents of these packs have not been fully described with the date announcement. An announcement is therefore not the same as DLC that is already available.

Game series

The original Ashes of the Singularity came out in 2016 and was known for its approach with large troop formations. In the sequel, humanity joins as a playable side in the conflict: instead of only the struggle between Post-Humans and machines, three sides can now fight against each other.

Oxide Games is the developer and Stardock Entertainment the publisher. The two companies announced the sequel in August 2025.
