What is At Fate's End?

At Fate’s End is a hand-drawn single-player action-adventure from Thunder Lotus, the studio behind Spiritfarer, Sundered and Jotun. It centres on Shan Hemlock, the young heir of a family whose members have become estranged. With the legendary sword Aesus, she explores a fantasy realm, searches for family secrets and confronts her siblings.

The story does not treat family relationships as mere background. Decisions about whether Shan fights a sibling or reconciles with them shape the development of her abilities and the course of the story. Thunder Lotus promises several endings; which combinations the finished story allows remains open until release.

Release

The action-adventure announced at the Xbox Games Showcase 2025 was originally scheduled for 2026. In an official developer post from Oct 6, 2026, Thunder Lotus moved the launch to 2027. No exact day or quarter has been given so far. The studio cites further polishing of the game as the reason for the move.

Since Oct 6, 2026, a free demo has been available on Steam. It is explicitly a preview of the main game, which is still in development, and not an Early Access launch. A new official gameplay trailer was released at the same time.

Platforms

Thunder Lotus plans At Fate’s End for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox, including Xbox Game Pass. The PC version is planned for Steam and the Epic Games Store. The official Xbox Store explicitly lists Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S as well as PC as supported platforms, and mentions Xbox Play Anywhere, Smart Delivery, Xbox cloud saves and single-player support.

The two Xbox console generations are listed separately as supported release platforms only because the official store names them, not based on assumed backward compatibility. A demo is currently confirmed officially only for PC via Steam. A precise launch date per platform has not yet been set.

Gameplay

Players guide Shan through hand-drawn areas in a two-dimensional side view. Combat demands the timing of sword attacks and the use of special abilities; between duels, secrets are uncovered through conversations, exploration and narrative puzzles. Information about a person is relevant to gameplay: in key encounters, Shan can apply pressure not only with her blade but also with the right words.

Thunder Lotus describes the confrontations as a mix of tactical combat and dialogue-based choices. Some conflicts can be influenced by Shan understanding her opponent’s motives and family history. Whether every encounter can be resolved without combat is not confirmed and should not be assumed.

Family tree and seven swords

Ability progress is tied to the Hemlock family. According to the studio, each sibling Shan defeats or reconciles with brings changes to her further path. She can collect seven powerful swords that expand her arsenal of abilities.

The family tree is therefore not an interchangeable menu metaphor: exploring personal secrets and choosing between reconciliation or combat are meant to have an immediate effect on Shan. The exact distribution of all abilities and possible relationships has not yet been fully documented ahead of the main game.

Playable demo: Camilla’s Story

The Steam demo, launched on Oct 6, 2026, focuses on Shan’s sister Camilla. The goal is to uncover the secret surrounding her and to face the subsequent confrontation with a sword, words or a combination of both. The excerpt is there to test exploration, conversations and combat in their interplay.

The preview is explicitly labelled as an unfinished development build. The Steam store lists a German user interface and German subtitles for the demo; German voice acting is not guaranteed there. The PC demo says nothing yet about whether or when a playable console version will follow.

Hand-drawn world and presentation

The world is designed as a two-dimensional fantasy adventure with a hand-crafted look. Instead of neutral arenas, varied locations and the characters’ body language are meant to carry the emotional conflicts. The gameplay presentation shown in Oct 2026 combines real-time duels with narrative investigation scenes.

The game is neither a sequel to Spiritfarer nor another management game. It takes up the studio’s emotional storytelling, but places much more emphasis on sword fighting and direct confrontations.

Game series

Thunder Lotus develops and publishes At Fate’s End itself. The Montréal-based team previously worked on Jotun, Sundered and Spiritfarer. At Fate’s End is a new standalone brand, not a numbered sequel to the earlier games. The narrative focus on relationships links the projects thematically, but the combat and progression systems are oriented differently.
