What is ATMOSFAR?

ATMOSFAR is a cooperative science fiction survival adventure by Apog Labs. It is set on the planet Tycos, with a world of floating islands, alien life forms and a failed human colony. Exploration takes place both with smaller aircraft called Wasps and from a larger mobile air base.

Unlike a fixed house or outpost, the central base moves on with the expedition. Players collect resources, repair their aircraft, improve their characteristics and try to find out why the colony collapsed.

Release

yesterday

Apog Labs has announced the start of PC early access for Oct 29, 2026. The date marks an early playable stage of development and not the release of version 1.0.

For the early access start, Steam lists two different regions with floating islands, three Wasp aircraft types and a working Cloud Cruiser. The full version is later to add a third region called The Rime, an additional Scout Wasp aircraft, a stronger base building system and the end of the story. The studio estimates at least nine months in early access, but explicitly considers longer development possible.

Gameplay

The game world consists of flying islands with their own habitats, animals, plants and dangers. From the sky, players look for suitable landing sites and resources. On the ground, they can break down scrap and craft spare parts and consumables from it.

Wind, rain, weather changes and time of day affect flying between the islands. Besides the actual exploration, aircraft must be maintained and damaged components replaced. Alien creatures and drones can become a danger.

Wasp aircraft and their roles

Wasps are smaller, agile aircraft that can hover, land and maneuver between islands. Their roles differ depending on the variant. The Utility Wasp can set up a foldable field camp. A Cargo Wasp transports heavy scrap parts. The Striker Wasp helps in encounters with hostile creatures, including by stunning them.

Steam describes four Wasp classes in the long term, but for the early access start names only three available variants. The fourth, a Scout Wasp, is according to the developer only planned for later major updates. Aircraft can be improved through engines, hull parts and drives.

The Cloud Cruiser as a mobile base

The large air base Cloud Cruiser replaces a permanently fixed camp. Its hangar houses aircraft and fuel, and living and work areas can also be fitted out. Players can steer the Cruiser themselves and take it to new destinations.

This construction combines base building with moving between regions: before longer flights, materials, fuel and repair options must be prepared. Additional and larger expansion options for the Cruiser are announced for later development phases.

Survival and crafting

Players must supply their equipment and aircraft with resources. According to the game description, a backpack system also serves for life support and power supply. The Wasps need fuel and maintenance, especially on long expeditions into unfamiliar areas.

Scrap found can be broken down into individual components. These can be used to craft items, consumables and new technical upgrades. The combination of travel, salvage and maintenance forms a lasting part of the survival system.

Solo and co-op flying

ATMOSFAR supports single player and online co-op for up to four players. Players can travel together with their Cloud Cruiser, form a formation of several Wasps and share the work on the mobile base.

According to the developer, save games are meant to be preserved throughout the early access phase. This is a stated intention, not a technical guarantee that save games will never be changed.
