What is Battleplan?

Battleplan is a real-time strategy game set in World War II by Foolish Mortals Games, published by Slitherine. It focuses on military operations in Western Europe. Instead of constantly controlling individual soldiers, you plan the movements of larger units and leave the officers to carry them out.

According to the publisher, the maps are based on geographic data. Roads, cities, elevation and forests affect movement, supply and combat. The game is a single-player wargame, not a global nation simulation.

Platforms

A native Windows PC version is confirmed. Steam lists single-player and the languages English, German, French, Spanish, Polish and Russian for text and subtitles. Voice audio is listed there for English only.

A native version for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, macOS or Linux is not confirmed by the official distribution details. Support for other systems should therefore not be inferred from general PC compatibility features.

Gameplay

On the operations map you plan attacks, defensive positions, counterattacks and withdrawals. Orders can cover several steps and units. Officers and the troops assigned to them carry out the plan on their own while the simulation keeps running.

If you want more precise control, you can also command individual units. The zone command system, expanded at launch, lets you hand larger sections of the front over to formations instead. Time can be paused and sped up.

Historical campaign

At launch, the single-player campaign includes eleven historical missions between the Normandy landings and Operation Varsity, plus two tutorial scenarios, according to the publisher. The operations span days to weeks and are set mainly in Western Europe.

Your own army is preserved between missions. Damaged formations need time to recover; unlocked units and officer experience affect later operations. The main campaign follows Allied forces, while separate scenarios also allow the German perspective.

Officers, divisions and army building

In the game, a division consists of a chain of command with subordinate regiments, battalions and companies. Players can restructure formations, request units and deploy or swap officers.

Infantry, tanks, engineers, reconnaissance, anti-tank and artillery each have different roles. Air reconnaissance and air support add to them. Experienced officers develop their own traits over the course of the campaign, which can be taken into account when planning.

Terrain and supply

Operations do not depend on combat strength alone. Supply routes and depots determine how long formations stay combat-ready. An advance can fail due to fuel shortages, even if the front initially looks favourable.

According to Slitherine, the maps use real geographic information on terrain, roads and elevation. Historical photos and videos linked to specific locations supplement the playable battles as contextual material.

What has changed compared to the demo

For the launch version, Slitherine lists, among other things, an expanded system for building armies, new zone commands, reworked reconnaissance and AI behaviour, and improved artillery, air and defence options. Also included are full mission briefings, new progression systems and an additional difficulty level called Veteran.

The publisher describes these features as changes compared to the previously available demo. Statements about later expansions remain plans and are not published content.
