Blasphemous 2

Blasphemous 2 is a dark 2D Metroidvania with a branching world, demanding combat and precise jumping sections. The Penitent One returns and seeks a way to stop the resurgent Miracle. Instead of a fixed order of missions, the focus is on exploration, unlockable abilities, and overcoming enemies and obstacles. The Game Kitchen developed the game as a sequel to Blasphemous, and Team17 published it.

The initial release was on August 24, 2023 for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Separate versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One followed on November 2, 2023. With the Mea Culpa expansion and the free True Torment update, the existing game was expanded with additional content on October 31, 2024.

Blasphemous 2 is available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4 and Xbox One. On PC, the Windows version is available through Steam, Epic Games and GOG, among others. The PS4 and Xbox One versions came out later as separate native releases. Their existence is therefore not merely a result of backward compatibility on newer consoles.

Blasphemous 2 combines precise platforming with combat and non-linear exploration. New abilities open up further areas of one connected map. Off the direct path, hidden items and quests await. Weapons and equipment can be upgraded, making different routes through the game world and combat approaches possible.

On October 31, 2024, the Mea Culpa expansion and the free True Torment update were released. The expansion adds new areas, bosses, quests and an additional way to complete the story. The free update expands the existing world and adds New Game Plus, among other things.

The Windows version requires at least Windows 10 64-bit, 4 GB RAM and 4 GB of storage. For the processor, Steam lists an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 or AMD Phenom II X2 550, and for the graphics card, among others, a GeForce GT 520 or Radeon HD 7470. An Intel Core i3-550 or AMD FX-4100 and 6 GB RAM are recommended. These figures apply to the PC, not the different console versions.

Veredicto, Ruego Al Alba, and Sarmiento and Centella represent three different fighting styles. The heavy censer swinger, the blade and the fast weapon duo each have their own attacks and upgrade paths. Players can adapt their approach to the enemies’ movement patterns and reach. Combat gear is also part of the progression system and unlocks additional options.

Blasphemous 2 is a single-player game. The PC version supports German on-screen text and subtitles, among other languages. According to Steam, voice acting is offered in English and Spanish. A multiplayer or co-op mode is not part of the described features. Language options can therefore be considered separately from the text you read in the game.

The free True Torment update was released alongside Mea Culpa in October 2024. It added New Game Plus with customisable challenges and expanded several existing areas. New connections between parts of the game world make it easier to return to regions you have already visited. Additional abilities and enemies permanently expand the base game, without needing the paid expansion.

Mea Culpa was released on October 31, 2024 as a paid expansion for Blasphemous 2. It adds two regions, additional quests and another possible ending to the story. The sword that gave the first game its name returns. Additional equipment and prayers expand your options. The expansion should not be confused with the free True Torment update.

The route of your journey is not fixed to a rigid sequence of locations. Players can take different paths through the interconnected regions. New abilities later unlock areas that were initially closed off. Revisiting areas you have already been to is worthwhile, as you can find more characters, hidden items and side quests there.

Combat requires a good sense of reach and timing. Different weapons offer their own combinations and movement patterns. Against larger enemies, you need to recognise attack patterns and seize the right moments for counterattacks. Upgradable weapon abilities add variety, as does the option to combine prayers and other equipment items.
