What is Canyons?

Canyons is a third-person PvE game from RedRuins Softworks that combines shooting, procedurally generated expeditions and the building of a lasting outpost. HypeTrain Digital is publishing the title. Alone or in a group of up to four, you set out from a protected settlement into dangerous canyons and return with equipment, resources and decisions.

What sets it apart are huge vehicles called Crawlers. They carry the group through the desert and are also an upgradeable part of combat. The developers are not planning a pure multiplayer shooter without long-term development: settlement, character abilities and equipment are tied to the expeditions into the wasteland.

Release

Source: Steam

RedRuins Softworks announced in October 2026 a release in November 2027. This month window is also shown on the current Steam page for the PC version. A specific release date is not yet known. The Windows version can also be wishlisted on the Epic Games Store.

For the announced console versions, PlayStation and Xbox have their own store listings. The PlayStation page currently gives no release date. So a binding worldwide simultaneous launch cannot yet be derived from the PC release month.

Platforms

PC is confirmed via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Microsoft lists Canyons as playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The PlayStation Store has its own announcement page; there the PS5 version is promoted, without a specific release date.

The supported consoles are to be distinguished from the PC version as standalone platforms. The store listings alone confirm neither crossplay nor cross-platform save progress. Such features will only be added once the providers give reliable information.

Gameplay

Every expedition starts from the protected settlement. From there the group drives into a branching canyon system, collects supplies, completes tasks and faces both human and supernatural enemies. The world is meant to be procedurally generated, but according to the developer it also includes specially designed locations and events.

Firearms, melee combat and the Crawler's technical systems interlock. Whether to push further or return with the loot already found is a recurring decision. The developer has also described large enemy groups as a planned combat element; their technical and gameplay design may still change before release.

Crawlers as vehicles and mobile base

The namesake Crawlers are large, mobile machines that drive through the dried-out canyons. They can be dismantled and prepared for different tasks. The outpost offers workshops and facilities for repairs and new builds, among other things.

This way the vehicle serves two purposes: it transports the crew to distant targets and, in action, provides a platform for weapons and defense. How many Crawlers, modules and crew roles the finished version will have is not yet fully specified.

Settlement and supplies

The Haven of the Covenant is meant to be more than a menu between missions. Players set up workshops, quarters, defenses, garages and supply facilities. Other residents can work in the settlement as traders, craftsmen or medical helpers.

Expansion creates equipment and services for upcoming expeditions; at the same time the settlement must be protected. RedRuins describes settlement development itself as one of the two central pillars of the game, alongside the missions in the field. Details on build limits and final scope are still pending.

Awakened and Blood Pacts

The inhabitants of the game world know of beings that bring lifeless things to life. These Awakened can be dangerous enemies; some, however, also grant their powers through so-called Blood Pacts. Such pacts are planned as part of the playable abilities.

The Crusaders belong to a religious order that venerates the Awakened while also fighting them. The conflict between beliefs, the use of supernatural powers and how to deal with other survivors forms the framework for the expeditions.

Solo and co-op

The game is designed for one to four players. Steam lists online co-op; the console stores list matching multiplayer features. The developer describes battles in which the group can split tasks such as vehicle weapons, support or securing chokepoints among themselves.

Group play is not required: The product description also confirms a single-player mode. Which scaling and balance will apply to solo players in the end remains to be seen until release.

Factions and consequences

Several factions live among the dangerous canyons. Among them, the developer names lawmen, raiders and the Diesel Cult. The relationship with them is meant to respond to choices and moral judgments. Contacts can bring benefits such as access to equipment or vehicle parts.

The game aims to offer more than loot and enemy waves. However, it has not yet been confirmed how branching the consequences in the finished campaign actually are.

Development and repositioning

RedRuins Softworks significantly reworked the original direction during production. In a development report from November 2025, the studio described moving away from a simpler desert and zombie concept toward today's mix of mystical crusaders, Awakened enemies and a more independent game world.

The first longer gameplay look, from December 2025, according to the developer explicitly showed only an early prototype of one section. The later co-op footage and the newly confirmed release window are therefore a progress update, but not a basis for statements about the final quality or performance.
