What is Cat and Paste!?

Cat and Paste! is an asymmetric online hide-and-seek game in which cats compete against seekers. Instead of choosing just one object as disguise, cats copy objects from the game world and place additional dummies. Hiding spots can thus change during a match, and whole clusters of seemingly ordinary set objects emerge.

The appeal lies in two perspectives on the same environment: for the cats it is both building kit and cover, for the hunters a search picture full of false clues. BeXide develops and publishes the game itself.

Release

No release date is yet known for the full version of Cat and Paste!. BeXide has set up a Steam store page for the PC version. The free, time-limited open playtest from Oct 16 to 19, 2026 is an advance preview and must not be confused with the finished game or a free full version.

The studio has not made any binding announcements about prices or possible additional platforms later.

Platforms

A native PC version for Windows and macOS is announced via Steam. Both operating systems belong to the shared PC product family, not to separate console versions. For PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, the official announcement contains no release commitment.

Matches take place online with two to 16 players. Fellow players can be friends or participants from public rooms. A local multiplayer mode is not confirmed.

Gameplay

The cats can transform into objects of various sizes: crates, barrels, tractors or even large trees. Using the insert function, they place copies on the map, changing possible hiding spots and diverting the search. Camouflage is not perfect, though: cat eyes, a peeking tail or irregular dummies can give them away.

Hunters use a hammer and a rifle. A hammer swing clears several nearby objects; a rifle hit can trigger a chain reaction with linked decoys. Both sides thus affect the same changing environment.

Two rule variants

Hide & Seek Royale is a contest over successful discoveries: first everyone hides as cats, then they search in the hunter role. Whoever finds the most cats wins. Hide & Seek WARS, by contrast, uses an asymmetric team principle. Cats that are found switch to the hunter side, while the remaining cats must survive until the end of the round.

The two modes therefore set different priorities. In Royale, each player's hit tally counts, while in WARS, every discovery shifts the balance of power between the two teams.

Custom maps with the editor

BeXide plans an edit mode in which groups can place objects on the map themselves and save designed arenas. For a hide-and-seek game, this is a fundamental feature: which objects are where determines which disguises look convincing and where seekers are led astray.

The separation of game versions is important: according to the developer, the editor is only part of the full version, not the open playtest. How extensive the finished editing and sharing features will be has not yet been fully described.

Play with friends and viewers

BeXide offers private rounds with friends as well as publicly accessible rooms. Invite codes can also bring viewers of a live stream into a match. The concept is therefore not aimed exclusively at fixed groups, but also at changing online lobbies.

The official maximum is 16 players; how many players start in each role depends on the chosen mode. A general promise of crossplay with consoles would currently be unfounded, as such versions have not been announced yet.
