Commandos: Origins

Commandos: Origins takes the real-time tactics series back to its beginnings. The story follows six specialists in World War II who carry out secret missions behind enemy lines. Claymore Game Studios developed the game for Kalypso Media. Instead of large armies, the focus is on small strike teams, careful approaches and the teamwork of different abilities.

The main version came out on Apr 9, 2025 for Windows PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The native digital versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One followed on Sep 17, 2025. Releases for older and newer consoles should be told apart; a playable PS4 version on PS5 is also not a replacement for the separately sold native PS5 version. The campaign expansions came out later.

The game is offered for Windows PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Xbox lists Smart Delivery and features for co-op as well as local screen sharing. On PlayStation, separate PS4 and PS5 products are listed. Xbox Cloud Gaming is an access method, not an additional native platform. A standalone Nintendo Switch version is not listed by the publisher websites.

The player coordinates several small characters across large mission maps and watches patrols and lines of sight. Secret routes, terrain, distractions and targeted actions open alternative paths to the mission goal. Several commands can be prepared and synced with each other. The game rewards forward planning and uses the group's abilities as tactical tools.

Shadows over Crete added four missions set on Crete on Nov 18, 2025. No Man Left Behind followed on Apr 28, 2026, also with four new missions, and tells the backstory and rescue of the Green Beret. The Deluxe Edition mainly adds extras such as alternative character looks, a calendar, music and a printable model. A Deluxe upgrade is therefore not the same as one of the two campaign DLCs.

For the PC version, the listed requirements are Windows 10 64-bit, at least 8 GB RAM, an Intel i5-4690K or Ryzen 7 2700, a GTX 970 or RX 580, and 31 GB of free storage. Recommended are 16 GB RAM, an i7-9700 or Ryzen 7 3700X, and an RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT. An SSD is recommended. The requirements do not apply as benchmarks for console hardware.

The base campaign includes fourteen missions across various European and North African settings. The official product descriptions mention cold northern regions and desert landscapes, among others. Besides the main objectives, there are additional goals. The missions allow several approaches; vehicles and alternative routes are part of how the maps are built.

The campaign can be played alone or co-operatively with a second player. Publishers and platform stores list both online co-op and local split screen. According to the developers, the first mission is excluded from the shared campaign. Steam also lists LAN co-op and cross-platform multiplayer in its feature list. Co-op changes how tasks are shared, not the core idea of tactical missions.

The Kalypso FAQ describes various vehicles and stationary equipment in certain missions. Commands can be coordinated to use several characters together. Besides manual saving, there is quick save and quick load, whose buttons and controls vary by platform. This system lets you try different approaches without restarting the whole mission each time.

Six specialists make up the team: Jack O'Hara, Thomas Hancock, Francis Woolridge, Samuel Brooklyn, James Blackwood and Rene Duchamp. Their roles cover reconnaissance, mobility, technical tasks and covert access to targets. The characters complement each other when planning missions.

The PC store lists text and voice output in German. The PlayStation version also offers German on-screen text and voice output. Options need to be checked separately for each platform. The Kalypso FAQ currently mentions no plans for official mod support.
