Gameplay
Dark Messiah combines sword strikes, parries, bows and magic with direct first-person controls. Battles leave room for different approaches: enemies can be fought head-on, hit from a distance or taken out using the environment. A kick can, for example, knock foes off chasms or send them flying into traps.

Physics and environment
The Source engine makes movable objects and the scenery an integral part of combat. Toppled objects, ropes, chasms and flammable areas open up extra options alongside the weapons themselves. These interactions set the game apart from role-playing games, where combat is decided mainly by damage values.

Spells and abilities
Spells complement melee and ranged combat. As progress is made, Sareth invests in new skills and more powerful attacks. The skill system does not lock him into a single discipline, so melee, magic and sneaking can be combined.

Sneaking and alternative routes
Not every enemy has to be defeated in a direct confrontation. Those who use shadows, distance and the environment can avoid fights or start from a favourable position. The game rewards situational play as well as quick reactions.
