What is DayZ Badlands?

DayZ Badlands is a paid map expansion for the survival game DayZ by Bohemia Interactive. It takes you to the 267 square kilometre desert province of Nasdara with dry plains, mountains, settlements, abandoned oil fields and military installations. The DLC is not a standalone game and requires a matching version of the base DayZ game.

Heat, sandstorms and scarce water supplies change how you plan routes. Rebuildable infrastructure and puzzles solved through radio messages add to open survival and create new reasons for players to meet.

Release

DayZ Badlands was released on Oct 15, 2026 as a paid expansion for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Bohemia Interactive confirmed the launch on its official website. A native PlayStation 5 version has not been announced separately: the PS4 version must not be listed as a PS5 release based on backward compatibility alone.

For Nintendo Switch 2, Bohemia names Q1 2027 as the release window, without giving an exact date. The Switch 2 base game is already available; the new Nasdara expansion is not automatically included in the existing base game.

Platforms

On PC, Badlands is sold as a DLC on Steam, among others. For consoles, versions are coming to PS4, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The Xbox Store lists Xbox One and Xbox Series under one shared product right, although DayZ has separate native base game versions for both generations.

For Switch 2, the DLC has only been announced for Q1 2027. If you use the PS4 version on a PS5, you are not yet playing a version that has been explicitly confirmed as a native PS5 version. On every platform, you need the DayZ base game to access the additional map.

Gameplay

Badlands keeps the open survival concept of DayZ. Players search for gear, food and drinking water, meet other survivors, and have to hold their own against infected as well as human opponents. Instead of linear missions, conflict and cooperation arise from sharing a dangerous world.

Nasdara's dry environment shifts familiar priorities. Heat and water shortages make travel harder, and crumbling infrastructure becomes a valuable resource. If you spend longer outside settlements, you need more than weapons and a full backpack.

DLCs and expansions

Part of DayZ

Badlands is itself a paid expansion that requires the DayZ base game to play. Frostline is a separate DLC with the winter Sakhal map. Bohemia also offers Frostline and Badlands together in the Hot & Cool Bundle; this is a package of existing DLCs, not a third standalone map.

Alongside the Badlands launch, the free DayZ 1.30 update was released. The motorbikes, animation changes and fall physics it introduced are part of the general game update and are not an exclusive purchase bonus for Badlands. The wipe announced at launch was a server-side reset and should not be listed in the product description as a permanent DLC feature.

System requirements

On PC, Badlands requires the DayZ base game. Steam lists the minimum as Windows 10 64-bit, Intel Core i5-4430 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600, 8 GB RAM, GeForce GTX 760 or Radeon R9 270X, DirectX 11 and about 25 GB of free storage.

Recommended specs include Intel Core i5-6600K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X, 12 GB RAM, GeForce GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 580, and around 30 GB of storage. These values are the store's minimum and recommended technical specs, not a guarantee of any particular frame rate.

Nasdara: 267 km² of desert, towns and mountains

According to Bohemia Interactive, Nasdara is at 267 km/sup>/sup> so far the largest map built specifically for DayZ. It combines desert plains with rugged mountains, populated areas, abandoned oil fields, military facilities and former evacuation zones.

The dry region is deliberately different from the landscapes of Chernarus, Livonia and Sakhal. It is an additional map within the DayZ universe and does not replace any existing areas. The mix of open plains and settlements shapes exploration, hiding spots and supplies.

Heatstroke, sandstorms and scarce supplies

Heat and kicked-up sand become lasting survival risks in Nasdara. The developer names heatstroke and silicosis as new health hazards. Suitable gear, shade and protection from storms are therefore more than cosmetic details.

Water is needed for more than drinking: it can also be used for cooling and for rinsing sand out of your eyes. Sandstorms make the already scarce supply harder and can turn expeditions between two places into a planning challenge of their own.

Rebuild wells and buildings

According to Bohemia, nearly 5,000 structures can be repaired on Nasdara. These include crumbling buildings, wells and irrigation tunnels. Through repairs, former ruins can again serve as shelter or supply stations.

This creates a shared element: a restored well can supply water to several groups, but it can also spark disputes over a scarce resource. Rebuilding is therefore more than private base decoration.

Radio messages and hidden bunkers

A new scouting system works with Morse code. Using a portable radio, players can receive broadcasts, decode hints such as coordinates and access codes from them, and search for underground facilities.

The mechanic makes listening, combining and travelling to your destination part of the search for special locations. Not every hidden place is revealed by an obvious map marker. Anyone who ignores radio messages misses potential routes to loot and secrets.

PvP, cooperation and shared resources

Badlands uses the open multiplayer structure of the DayZ base game. On shared servers, players can team up, avoid one another or fight over water, equipment and shelters. The behavior of other survivors remains a hard-to-predict danger.

Repairable wells and facilities can create new meeting points. A location developed together improves supplies, but can later be contested. That the DLC launches on several consoles is no proof of cross-platform crossplay. Server rules and the DayZ version used must be considered separately.

Regional equipment, animals and infected

Bohemia expands the selection of weapons, clothing and other survival items for Nasdara. The equipment suits an environment where dust protection and heat management matter.

The wildlife and infected enemies also come in variants suited to the region. The additional items and creatures are part of the desert world; general changes in DayZ version 1.30, released at the same time, should be considered separately.

Language and subtitles

Steam lists German text for the interface and subtitles for the PC version. This does not mean the game has full German voice acting. Details for console versions should be checked on the respective product page rather than taken from Steam.

Studio and place within DayZ

Badlands comes from Bohemia Interactive, developer and publisher of the DayZ base game. Nasdara adds the already playable regions Chernarus, Livonia and Sakhal, and extends the DayZ universe with a dry, crisis-torn setting.

The developer FAQ places the new province in a fictional geopolitical setting. It is a standalone expansion map, not a mere re-release of an earlier Arma map and not a standalone DayZ successor.
