DEFCON

DEFCON is a minimalist real-time strategy game from Introversion Software, released in 2006. Matches take place on an abstracted world map and focus on strategic planning, limited information and fragile alliances.

The reduced presentation with maps, symbols and lines is a central part of the game's identity and draws on the aesthetics of classic Cold War thrillers.

DEFCON originally came out on September 29, 2006. For its 20th anniversary, Introversion released a free 20th Anniversary Edition in September 2026, which modernizes the technical foundation while keeping the core game design intact.

The classic version remains available as a Legacy version.

DEFCON is available for Windows, macOS and Linux. The 20th Anniversary Edition updates the technical foundation for modern desktop systems; 64-bit builds are available for Windows and Linux.

DEFCON focuses on strategic decisions on a global map. Players manage their units, analyze information and decide when cooperation makes sense and when the situation changes.

The game supports single-player matches as well as competitive and cooperative multiplayer rounds. The deliberately abstract presentation puts planning, timing and diplomacy at the center rather than direct control of individual figures.

The anniversary version replaces the older graphics and audio systems with a modernized technical foundation. Introversion mentions, among other things, high-resolution coastlines, better scaling on high-resolution displays, support for ultrawide and multi-monitor setups, and HDR.

It also adds modernized graphics interfaces, a revised sound output, performance improvements and more robust network connections. The new version remains sync-compatible with the Legacy version.

The 20th Anniversary Edition uses modernized render paths and offers 64-bit versions for Windows and Linux. Introversion has updated core libraries and interfaces to keep the game running on current systems over the long term.

The earlier version remains available as a Legacy version. This means older setups and mods can keep using the previous technical base if needed.
