What is Diablo V?

Diablo V is the next main entry in Blizzard’s action RPG series. This time the story does not begin shortly before the catastrophe but after it: Diablo has conquered Sanctuario, the great heroes of the past have vanished, and the Lord of Terror is using the people and souls of the world for the Eternal Conflict.

Players take on the role of the heir of Westmark and travel through the charred remains of a realm that has become an outpost of Hell. A growing caravan of survivors accompanies the journey and replaces the safe towns of earlier series entries.

Gameplay

Diablo V remains an action RPG, but it relies much more heavily on a changing world. Diablo actively reshapes Sanctuario. Terrain, locations, monsters and rewards can change when players return to an area. Instead of a fixed safe hub, a caravan of traders and companions grows along the way, each with its own stories.

Blizzard has revealed the first three classes: Demon Hunter, Monk and the new Plague Knight. The Plague Knight spreads diseases and plagues and can then turn them into their own strength. For items, the team is again drawing more on Diablo II: stat requirements, inventory items of different sizes, sets, runes and runewords are meant to return. Crafting is also meant to build on the approaches of Lord of Hatred.

Game series

Diablo V continues the main series after Diablo IV and takes the series' central motif in a new direction: the Lord of Terror is this time not only the looming final boss threat, but already rules Sanctuary from the start. At the same time, Blizzard deliberately draws on ideas from earlier entries for classes and itemization. Demon Hunter and Monk return, while runes, rune words and more pronounced item identity recall Diablo II.

Blizzard deliberately chose a new main entry instead of another major Diablo IV expansion. Executive Producer Matt Zitterman explained after BlizzCon 2026 that the planned changes reach deep enough into the world and game structure that they would have been difficult to implement as an expansion. The team also felt that Diablo's return as the central antagonist should get a complete story of its own. The early announcement is also meant to allow player feedback to be incorporated during development.
