What is Die Sims 3?

Die Sims 3 is a life simulation by The Sims Studio. Instead of following a preset hero's journey, you create your own Sims, your home and the everyday life of a neighborhood. Relationships, friendships, jobs and family developments arise from the characters' traits and your decisions.

The game relies on one continuous neighborhood instead of individual, isolated house lots. Sims can visit other places, meet people and collect experiences. Even without a fixed game goal, everyday life stays structured through wishes, life goals and changing needs.

Release

Electronic Arts dates the release of the PC main game to June 1, 2009; the Steam product page shows June 2 for some regions. Standalone versions followed in Europe on Oct 29, 2010 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS, on Nov 12, 2010 for Wii and on Mar 25, 2011 for Nintendo 3DS.

These versions are not just interchangeable discs of the same PC product. On console and handheld, the controls and in some cases whole game systems were changed. The Mac version belongs to the PC version, even though EA later provided a separate 64-bit adaptation for it.

Platforms

Die Sims 3 was released natively for Windows PC and Mac as well as for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS. Windows and macOS count as the PC version. The Nintendo DS version must not be confused with the later Nintendo 3DS release.

Prices are only compared for the four standalone products for PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and 3DS. For Wii and Nintendo DS, there are no correspondingly checked commercial listings here. The historical release dates do not automatically prove that you can still buy it digitally on older consoles today.

Gameplay

A Sim has needs, traits and wishes. Your decisions shape their mood, social life and life path. You can pursue jobs, maintain friendships, start families or deliberately try unusual developments. The game does not judge these stories by a single preset victory.

Switching between house and neighborhood is part of the game rhythm: visiting a neighbor, a shared outing and the way to work are not separate mission menus. Building up skills, careers and personal goals creates long-term tasks.

DLCs and expansions

Die Sims 3 received many large expansions and smaller accessory packs. Reiseabenteuer expands exploration with destinations, Late Night focuses on nightlife, Supernatural adds supernatural characters and Inselparadies expands life by the water. Into the Future introduces a future world.

There is also more content on careers, family, seasons and design. It is sold separately from the main game, and not every PC expansion is part of the standalone console versions. When buying, check the platform stated and the base version required.

System requirements

Electronic Arts lists the historical minimum requirements for Windows of the game released in 2009: Windows XP SP2, Vista SP1 or Windows 7, a Pentium 4 processor at 2.0 or 2.4 GHz, at least 1 to 1.5 GB RAM and 7.1 GB hard drive space plus room for your own content. For a more modern setup, EA names a Core i5, a GeForce GTX 650, 4 GB RAM and at least 18 GB of storage.

These are official manufacturer details, not a guarantee of trouble-free operation on every modern Windows version. macOS has its own requirements, especially for the 64-bit version released later. Extensive expansions and mods can increase storage and performance needs.

The details apply to pc.

The open neighborhood as a game world

Unlike the earlier game structure, which was split more into individual lots, houses, streets and community places in Die Sims 3 are part of one continuous neighborhood. Sims drive or walk to different places, meet acquaintances or pursue their own activities. Other households can also develop in the background.

This makes life outside your own house an important part of the simulation. Lots stay customizable, but their neighborhood is more than a selection screen for individual places to visit.

Personality and life goals

In The Sims 3, selected personality traits influence which wants and reactions a Sim develops. Needs, relationships, friendships, skills and careers combine into a self-designed everyday life.

Life goals give each character long-term aims. The player can pursue these goals or let a different story unfold.

Building, decorating and customising patterns

Houses and lots can be individually designed using walls, floors, doors, windows and furniture. Rooms affect daily life, because Sims sleep, cook, study or receive guests there. Working on gardens and outdoor areas is also part of the core of the game.

With the Create a Style design system, the colours, patterns and surfaces of many objects can be changed. Personalisation therefore goes well beyond a few preset furniture variants.

64-bit and Metal version for Mac

The Sims 3 was released for Windows and Mac. Because older technical components were dropped in modern macOS versions, Electronic Arts released a dedicated 64-bit/Metal edition. This adjustment changes the system requirements, not the identity of the main PC game.

Mac players should check the requirements listed by EA and the download that matches their installation. PC expansions are not automatically part of the standalone console versions.

Game series

Die Sims 3 belongs to the Die-Sims-Reihe published by Electronic Arts and followed the second main part. The developer is The Sims Studio. The series combines creating characters and houses with simulated everyday life, social relationships and free experimentation.

The third part sets its own focus, mainly through the open neighborhood. Later games such as Die Sims 4 take other approaches to creating, building and Sim behavior, but they do not replace the standalone features of the Sims 3 game world.
