Dying Light

Dying Light is Techland's survival horror game from 2015. As Kyle Crane, you enter the quarantined city of Harran and discover an open world full of Infected. Instead of fixed corridors, free parkour movement across rooftops, obstacles and facades determines the way through the city.

The game combines resource hunting, weapon crafting, melee combat and character progression. The danger changes with the day-night cycle: at night, especially aggressive Infected become a threat, so routes and escape routes become crucial.

Techland gives January 26, 2015 as the first release for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Some regional store listings give January 27. The native Nintendo Switch version followed on October 19, 2021.

The major expansion The Following brought a rural map and upgradable buggies in 2016. Further DLCs and new editions followed. The Retouched Update from 2025 refreshed graphics and sound on supported platforms.

Native versions exist for PC (Windows, macOS, Linux), PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. The PC version is available via Steam and other stores. The Nintendo Switch edition is a standalone port.

Techland lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series only as backward compatible with the respective older console version. The playability of a Switch version on Switch 2 also does not count as a separate native Switch 2 release.

Harran can be explored by parkour over rooftops, walls and interiors. Players improve movement and combat skills and craft melee weapons from collected materials. During the day, exploration and missions take center stage; at night, especially dangerous Infected hunt. UV light, safe zones and planned escape routes gain importance.

The Following is a new campaign set on a rural map. Upgradable buggies change movement and combat. The Bozak Horde offers special combat trials, Cuisine & Cargo additional quarantine zones and Hellraid a fantasy dungeon adventure. Cosmetic weapon and outfit packs are not part of these major add-on content.

The minimum requirements of the Windows version include an Intel Core i5-2500 or AMD FX-8320, 4 GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 560 or Radeon HD 6870, and 40 GB of free storage. The store recommends a Core i5-4670K or FX-8350, 8 GB RAM and a GTX 780 or Radeon R9 290.

The game's historical OS specifications must be distinguished from the requirements of the current Steam client. Separate requirements apply for macOS and Linux.

The Essentials Edition bundles the entry into the game with selected extras. The Definitive 10th Anniversary Edition is Techland's most comprehensive collection and includes the major expansions as well as the released skin packs. The free Retouched Update from 2025 improved graphics and audio output on supported PC and console platforms. Nintendo Switch was excluded from this overhaul.

The expansion The Following moves the story into open landscapes. Upgradable buggies create a different way of getting around than the city's parkour system. In addition, Kyle Crane investigates the secret of a cult. The new region and the vehicle progression system are central permanent DLC features.

The campaign can be played alone or co-op with up to four people. When exploring and on missions, groups can complement each other. A separate multiplayer variant exists in the asymmetric mode Be the Zombie, in which one participant controls a zombie creature. In single-player, a constant internet connection is not required.
