What is End of Abyss?

End of Abyss is a gloomy sci-fi action adventure from Section 9 Interactive. It centers on young combat technician Cel, who investigates disturbances with her crew in a facility deep underground. The mission leads into abandoned sectors full of damaged machines and creatures that only faintly seem human anymore.

The game combines an isometric perspective with exploration, direct combat and a Metroidvania structure. New tools and abilities open previously blocked paths, so areas you've already visited become interesting again later with new possibilities.

Gameplay

End of Abyss focuses on exploration from an isometric top-down perspective, fights against resilient creatures and gradually opening new paths. Cel can upgrade her equipment and uses a Scanner to track down clues, hidden areas and technical connections in the facility.

The structure is based on Metroidvania principles: tools and progress change which paths are reachable, and invite you to revisit earlier corridors later. The small development team describes the focus as a deliberate shift away from a faster top-down shooter towards a slower, tension-driven mix of horror, combat and exploration.

Development and style

Section 9 Interactive is based in Malmö and was founded by former Tarsier developers. The studio gradually developed End of Abyss from an early action prototype into a more atmospheric horror adventure. According to co-founder Marcus Ottvall, films, games, comics and anime from the 1980s and 1990s shaped the visual direction. The underground facility is therefore meant to feel deliberately used, mechanical and slightly out of time.

The enemies, too, started out as gameplay ideas: the team defined the desired functions and behaviors, then built creature designs, animations and destructible elements on top of that.
