What is Enshrouded?

Enshrouded is an open-world survival action RPG from Keen Games. You play a Flameborn and explore the fantasy world of Embervale, whose regions have partly been swallowed by the deadly Shroud. Exploration, resource gathering and crafting feed directly into action RPG combat and a free-form voxel building system.

Walls, terrain and entire settlements can be shaped with relatively few limits. At the same time, your gear and character grow through loot, crafting and an extensive skill tree. Enshrouded can be played solo; on PC, the current version also supports online co-op for up to 16 players.

Platforms

PC (Steam) and PlayStation 5 have been available since Oct 15, 2026. The PC version supports online co-op for up to 16 people, while the PS5 version supports up to eight online players, DualSense features and PS5 Pro optimisation.

The native version for Xbox Series X|S is only announced for spring 2027. Crossplay between PC and PS5 is not supported at launch. According to Keen Games, it is working on this but has not yet named a date. PS4 and Xbox One have not been announced.

Enshrouded is verified for Steam Deck. The Windows version runs on Valve's handheld via the Proton compatibility layer. This does not mean a standalone Linux release.

Gameplay

The core of Enshrouded combines exploration, survival and base building with direct action RPG combat. Time spent inside the Shroud is limited, while outside the mist resources, ruins, enemies and building sites await you. With the voxel system, you can not only build structures but also shape the landscape and the ground beneath it.

During Early Access, Keen Games expanded the game significantly several times. Wake of the Water brought dynamically simulated water, swimming and diving, fishing, water-related building pieces, and the new high-level area Veilwater Basin, and raised the level cap to 45.

Forging the Path brought a comprehensive combat and progression overhaul: heavy attacks, focus-based special abilities, reworked enemy awareness, a new skill tree and gear improvements. At the same time, Adventure Sharing launched, allowing community worlds to be published, searched and downloaded.

DLCs and expansions

Keen Games has so far released its major gameplay expansions as updates to the base game. The most extensive include Wake of the Water and Forging the Path; they expand the world, systems and combat mechanics without being treated as separate gameplay DLC.

No standalone paid story or gameplay expansion has currently been announced for version 1.0. Additional content should therefore be considered separately from optional products such as the soundtrack.

Adventure Sharing: Publish and visit worlds

With the update Forging the Path, released on Apr 21, 2026, Enshrouded gained a dedicated feature for sharing game worlds. Players can give their local world a name, a description, tags and preview images, and upload it to the Adventure Sharing service. Others can search for published creations directly in the game, filter them by theme and download them.

For visitors, a flame altar can be set as the entry point. A craftable camera supports suitable preview images. The world can be visited alone or in a peer-to-peer group. The feature already available should be distinguished from other tools announced for the future for creating interactive adventures.

Voxel building system and your own settlements

Enshrouded treats base building as a standalone game system: walls, roofs, rooms and entire settlements are made from gathered materials. Terrain can also be shaped. The voxel approach allows far freer forms than a building system that only lines up prefabricated buildings.

The buildings serve gameplay purposes at the same time, as survivors and crafting stations are integrated into your own base. Gear, exploration and design are therefore connected. The update Wake of the Water further expanded building with water surfaces and water-related building pieces.

Sparkworks: Circuits for your own adventures

Since Version 1.0 of Oct 15, 2026, players can add interactive sequences to self-built worlds using Sparkworks. Switches and triggers can be linked to doors, traps, puzzles or enemy encounters. The system also offers logic connections and timed events for custom challenges.

Sparkworks extends the existing Adventure Sharing: alongside decorative buildings, you can now create dungeons, obstacle courses or escape rooms and share them as game worlds. It is part of the full version, not a separately announced paid DLC.

Cinder’s Cradle and the completed game world

Enshrouded 1.0 opens up the north of Embervale with the region Cinder’s Cradle. It combines a volcanic landscape with floating islands. Twelve more Shroud Roots as well as new paths and quests expand exploration. Two Hollow Halls are also added, in the Albaneve Summits and in the Veilwater Basin.

The main story gets a provisional conclusion in version 1.0. Existing areas are kept and in some places expanded.

With the full release, the maximum character level rises to Level 50. Equipment can be upgraded up to Level 55; the flame can be developed further and the number of possible flame altars raised to up to 16.

Nine new spell types expand magic combat. Eternal spells and arrows can now be upgraded, and additional combat skills expand, among other things, the use of wands. When an existing save from version 1.0 is first played, the skill tree is reset; the points must be reassigned.

Version 1.0 introduces a Brick Renderer that displays distant landscapes and voxel structures in more detail. The visuals also support HDR and reworked lighting.

Written world texts and key characters are voiced in German, English and Mandarin. Notes can be listened to while exploring. A setting for reduced camera inertia adds to the accessibility options.

On the Steam Deck, Enshrouded is rated by Valve as “Verified”. The rating applies to the PC version running on the handheld and is not a separate console release.
