What is Faraway?

Faraway is a minimalist arcade puzzle game in which a shooting star with self-drawn constellations stays alive. You steer the glowing celestial body through an abstract cosmos and connect individual stars. Each connection provides energy, which extends the shooting star's short lifespan.

The game forgoes a classic story and instead focuses on movement, rhythm and gradually mastering a few rules. Developer Steph Thirion created Faraway alone over more than a decade. Annapurna Interactive is publishing it.

Gameplay

In Faraway, you draw constellations by steering a shooting star through space and connecting stars. Each connection brings new energy before the glowing body burns out. What matters is not only which stars you reach, but also how you accelerate from one to the next.

You can swing around stars and catapult yourself onward like a slingshot. The drawn connection line remains part of the constellations. If you complete a circle or attempt other more difficult manoeuvres, you are rewarded with extra energy and points. This creates a back-and-forth between safe paths and risky shortcuts.

What sets the individual runs apart?

Endless mode generates the game world in real time with each new attempt. The starry sky changes as you fly. The more skilfully you collect energy and plan connections, the faster you move and the more demanding the coming areas become.

The goal is not a fixed end, but an ever longer journey with the highest possible score. Online leaderboards on Steam let you compare your results with others. This mode suits both short attempts and players who want to perfect their movements.

16 pre-made puzzles as a second game mode

Alongside endless mode, Faraway includes 16 specially designed puzzle levels. They apply the same basic rules to targeted challenges. Instead of mainly lasting as long as possible, you need to find the right flight path and the correct order of connections.

The puzzles also help you learn advanced movements. If you then start the endless starry sky again, you can use your newly practised tricks there for higher scores.

Development and graphic style

Faraway was developed solo by Steph Thirion over more than a decade. The game designer, programmer and musician had previously created the experimental puzzle game Eliss. Instead of pre-made backdrops, Faraway relies on abstract shapes, movement and light.

The graphics are created entirely in real time during play. Stars, lines and colors form a shifting audiovisual landscape that reacts to your flight path and progress. Annapurna Interactive is publishing the PC and console versions.

How do you control Faraway?

Faraway is designed for fluid movement and short, precise decisions. As you circle around stars, your movement changes your next direction of flight. If you let go at the right moment, you use the momentum for the next connection and save precious energy.

The few basic rules are easy to understand. The game becomes challenging through timing, judging the trajectory in space, and deciding whether an extra detour is worth it for more points. On PC, you can play Faraway with a controller.
