What is FlatOut 4: Total Insanity VR?

FlatOut 4: Total Insanity VR is a standalone VR racing game based on FlatOut 4. Races and arena battles take place from the cockpit perspective. Drivers can look around the virtual interior, while rivals ram vehicles and destroy parts of the track barriers.

The conversion was made under the Flat2VR Spark program, led by VR developer Mutar. The vehicle cockpits of the original racing game were redesigned for this. Controls and the user interface are also tailored to VR headsets.

Gameplay

FlatOut 4: Total Insanity VR combines fast arcade racing with vehicle damage and a partly destructible environment. Whoever overtakes must dodge bumps and obstacles at the same time. Braking maneuvers and collisions can knock the vehicle off track.

The cockpit view, with visible hands, wing mirrors and speed display, replaces the external view. On impact, vehicle parts and occasionally the driver fly through the air.

Stunt mode, arenas and time trials

In twelve stunt challenges, the driver is deliberately thrown through the windshield. Goals range from long flights to precise hits. Since version 1.0, such ejections can also be followed directly from the first-person view.

Alongside classic races, there are time trials and Carnage events, where destruction earns points. Death Match, Capture the Flag and Survivor are available in six arenas. Assault races add weapons and attacks on rival vehicles to the field.

Online races for up to eight players

Online, up to eight players can race and compete in arena battles. The full version allows joining ongoing sessions and fills open starting slots with computer-controlled drivers. Spectators can follow ongoing races and take a seat in the passenger view.

The reworked lobbies support voice chat and automatic host transfer, so a session can keep running if the current host disconnects.

Steering wheels, motion controllers and haptics

The game supports control via VR motion controllers as well as steering wheels, pedals and gear shifters. With compatible hardware, bHaptics vests and motion platforms can also be used. Settings for the mirrors and the cockpit display are meant to help orientation during races.

The VR implementation uses six degrees of freedom. Players can lean forward in the seat or look sideways through the vehicle without the game camera snapping back to a fixed external view.

Game series

FlatOut 4: Total Insanity came out in 2017 as a classic racing game. The VR version is a standalone title, for which the vehicle interiors and cockpit feel were rebuilt.

Game modes such as races, arena and stunts are retained, but are played directly from the driver's perspective. Added are VR-specific steering wheel controls, headset movements and the optional driving physics settings from FlatOut 2.
