What is Frostpunk 2?

Frostpunk 2 is a city-building strategy and social simulation game from 11 bit studios. Three decades after the events of the first Frostpunk, a city grows out of humanity's last refuge, with districts, political groups and scarce resources. As leader, you decide not only about warmth and food, but also about the social price the community pays for survival.

Unlike its predecessor, the focus is on larger settlements, industrial decisions and the clash of different visions of the future.

Release

Frostpunk 2 was released on Sep 20, 2024 for PC. The native versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series followed on Sep 18, 2025.

With Fractured Utopias in December 2025 and Breach of Trust in June 2026, two major expansions were added. The Surge releases on Dec 14, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. After the third expansion, 11 bit studios plans to focus mainly on bug fixes and smaller improvements.

Platforms

Frostpunk 2 is available for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. On PC, the strategy game supports Windows and macOS. It is offered through Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG, among others. The console versions were released in September 2025.

Frostpunk 2 is a single-player game. On PC, FrostKit provides modding tools, and on Steam the Workshop offers community content.

Gameplay

City building takes place on a larger scale than in the first Frostpunk: you lay out entire residential, food, extraction and industrial districts, tap into resource deposits and expand infrastructure as temperatures fall.

Heat supply remains vital for survival. Instead of placing individual buildings, supply chains, laws and capacities must work together for a growing population. Exploring outside the city opens up further resources and settlements.

DLCs and expansions

Fractured Utopias has, since December 2025, expanded the possibilities of the Utopia Builder mode. New social visions of the future and political decisions change how individual playthroughs unfold.

Breach of Trust was released on Jun 23, 2026 and tells an additional scenario in New Edinburgh.

The Surge releases on Dec 14, 2026 and leads into a valley on the icy American continent. A newly discovered resource is meant to drive automation. The different factions come into conflict over its use. With special technology, even devastating snowstorms can be used to harvest and store resources. Caves and ruins expand exploration.

11 bit studios describes The Surge as the last major story scenario for Frostpunk 2. After that, mainly smaller technical improvements are planned.

System requirements

Under Windows, Frostpunk 2 requires at least 8 GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti with 4 GB or a comparable graphics card, and an SSD with 30 GB of free storage. Steam lists a Ryzen 5 1600 or Core i5-8400 as processors. Recommended are 16 GB RAM and an RTX 2060 Super or Radeon RX 5700.

A macOS version is also available. Steam lists at least macOS 14.5 and an Apple M1 chip with 8 GB of memory for it.

Council, factions and laws

Political power is as important a resource as fuel. Different factions pursue their own ideas of progress, order and social coexistence. Laws are debated and voted on in the council.

Political promises can secure votes in the short term, but they change relations between groups. Radical decisions can stabilize the city or trigger new conflicts. This creates several paths through the same survival crisis.

With FrostKit you can create your own content for Frostpunk 2. The tools from 11 bit studios support, among other things, custom maps, scenarios and rules. Through the Steam Workshop, players can find and use mods created by the community.
