What is Gears 5?

Gears 5 is a third-person shooter by The Coalition and Xbox Game Studios. The campaign centers on Kait Diaz, who explores her connection to the Swarm and her family's history as the war on Sera continues to escalate.

Alongside the story campaign, cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes are a permanent part of the game. The PC and Xbox versions support crossplay; on Xbox Series X|S, the Xbox One license runs via Smart Delivery in a technically optimized version.

The PC version was released on Sep 9, 2019 on Steam, the Xbox One version on Sep 10, 2019. On Nov 10, 2020, Gears 5 received a free Smart Delivery optimization with shorter loading times, Quick Resume, variable refresh rate and enhanced graphics options for the launch of Xbox Series X|S.

The Series X|S version is not a standalone native purchase SKU, but the optimized version of the same Xbox license.

Platforms

Gears 5 is natively available for Windows PC and Xbox One. On Xbox Series X|S, the Xbox One license runs in the optimized version via Smart Delivery. For Series X, Xbox lists 4K HDR graphics among other things; in versus mode, up to 120 frames per second are possible.

On PC, the game is available through Steam and the Xbox ecosystem. The platforms are linked via crossplay for supported multiplayer modes.

DLCs and expansions

Gears 5: Hivebusters was released on Dec 15, 2020. The campaign expansion follows Lahni, Keegan and Mac on the Galangi Islands, offers a standalone story campaign and supports co-op for up to three players.
