Gothic 1 Remake

Gothic 1 Remake is the new edition of the 2001 role-playing classic. As a nameless prisoner, you enter the Minental, a penal colony walled in by a magic barrier. There three camps fight for power, ore and survival. Alkimia Interactive rebuilt the world in Unreal Engine 5 and kept the open character development.

Gothic 1 Remake was released on June 5, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The first major feature update from October 29, 2026 adds a photo mode, Marvin mode and options to customize the hero's appearance for free.

The role-playing game was released natively for Windows PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. On PC it is sold through Steam and GOG, among others. A standalone PS4 or Xbox One version is not among the released versions.

You explore the Minental without a continuous navigation trail and learn through encounters, conversations and your own exploration which places are dangerous. Enemies do not automatically adjust to your strength. Combat, equipment, skills and the choice of a camp determine which options you get later on.

Feature Update #1 has added photo mode, Marvin mode and character customization options to the main game for free since October 29, 2026. The three features are available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

For the PC version, the minimum requirements are Windows 10 or 11 (64 Bit), 16 GB RAM, a GeForce RTX 2070 or Radeon RX 6700 XT and 60 GB SSD storage. Recommended specs include 32 GB RAM and an RTX 3070 Ti or RX 6800 XT, among others. The game requires DirectX 12.

In the Old Camp, the ore barons control a large part of the ore trade. In the New Camp, prisoners organize against this power structure, while in the Swamp Camp a separate religious community lives. Allegiance affects allies, quests and the development of your character.

The colony connects camps, mines, paths and wilderness into one coherent game world. Residents go about their own work, and animals as well as armed enemies make even familiar routes dangerous. Exploration is rewarding, but requires preparation and respect for your own abilities.

Melee, ranged and magic open different routes through the colony. Challenging a strong enemy too early can lead to failure quickly, even with good equipment. Progress therefore does not depend on reaction speed alone, but also on practice, resources and choosing your fights.

The nameless hero starts with little influence. Through quests, experience and new equipment he gains abilities. The choice of whom you help and which camp you join shapes your access to trainers and the course of the adventures.

Since October 29, 2026, you can capture scenes in the Minental with a dedicated photo mode. Several settings let you adjust the composition for landscapes, characters and fights. The feature is part of a free update on all three platforms.

Marvin mode has added extra ways to interfere with the game world since the first major feature update. For example, you can open locks, teleport or make objects, characters and creatures appear. The function, which is explicitly intended as a cheat mode, is there to try out situations outside regular game progress.

The nameless hero can be styled with various hairstyles and tattoos since the first feature update. These changes affect his appearance, while the game world and allegiance to the camps determine the actual role-playing choices.

Alongside the story around the magic barrier, conversations, smaller quests and conflicts between the camps shape your everyday life. Not every challenge has an obvious solution. It is often worthwhile to talk to different characters and get to know the relationships within the colony.

Gothic 1 Remake is a single-player RPG. The PC version offers full German and English voice acting as well as German subtitles. The game is not designed for shared adventures or competitive online modes.

The remake was made by Alkimia Interactive. THQ Nordic released the new edition on June 5, 2026. Rather than just changing the resolution and textures of the original, the team rebuilt the colony on the basis of Unreal Engine 5.
