What is Halls of Torment?

Halls of Torment is an action roguelite by Chasing Carrots, in which individual heroes fight growing monster hordes in the halls of the underworld. The top-down view, pre-rendered characters and gloomy backdrops recall action RPGs of the late 1990s. Each run starts with limited abilities and develops into your own character build through experience gained, equipment and new talents.

Gameplay

From an angled top-down view, you lead a hero through waves of enemies, dodge attacks and build up its strength during the fight. Experience unlocks new traits and abilities. Unlike a classic RPG, the challenge is to build an effective combination under time pressure and defeat the ruler of the underworld. On PC and consoles, regular runs take about half an hour.

DLCs and expansions

The Lost Archives was released on Oct 22, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The second major expansion opens the library of forbidden texts with new enemies and the boss Lord of Deceit. Two additional heroes change the fights: the Inquisitor marks enemies with Judgment and can execute weakened enemies on purpose. The Blood Apostle sacrifices her own health points to boost her attacks. There are also 66 tasks, three abilities, six artifacts and over 20 gear pieces.

The Boglands was released on Oct 28, 2025. The first major expansion adds a swamp area, the heroes Crone and Alchemist, over 50 tasks, and new gear and artifacts. Additional mechanics include earth effects and the Decay status, which weakens armor.

The separately sold Supporter Pack mainly offers visual extras and a training area for testing gear. Both major expansions require the base game.

Heroes and playstyles

The playable classes differ in their starting equipment, combat range and special abilities. Melee fighters have to read enemy movement differently than characters who attack from a distance or deal area damage. Unlocked traits and cross-class abilities create new combinations, so the same location can play out very differently with different heroes.

Permanent unlocks

Many rewards carry over beyond a single run. Completed tasks unlock new heroes, blessings, items and game options. Secured equipment expands the options for later battles. So it's not just about surviving a monster wave, but also about systematically growing your choices for future runs.

Items, equipment and blessings

Items you find change attacks, survivability or the effect of other talents. Rare equipment variants open up additional combinations. Blessings strengthen the hero right at the start of a new run, while abilities and traits gained during combat shape the current build. Combinations that support the same damage or control mechanic several times are especially effective.

Locations and bosses

The Halls consist of various areas with their own enemies and environmental features. Between regular monster waves, particularly dangerous foes and bosses appear, demanding different movement and dodge patterns. The confrontation with the Lords of Torment forms the climax of a regular run. New areas and tasks unlock as your progress over the longer term.

Artifacts and extra challenges

Artifacts change the rules of a run and can make it harder but also more rewarding. They are aimed mainly at players who have already unlocked many abilities and items. The Shrine of Torment offers further challenges, where different character builds have to prove themselves under tougher conditions.

What sets the smartphone version apart?

The mobile remaster, published by Erabit Studios, is designed for shorter battles of about six to fifteen minutes. The interface has been adapted for smartphones, while reworked equipment, gem and progression systems set their own focus. The Vault map and the Shrine of Torment have also been redesigned for this version. It is therefore not an unchanged port of the PC version.

Weekly challenges and new game modes

Since the free update of Oct 22, 2026, there is a Challenge Shrine with weekly changing tasks. The shrine becomes accessible after defeating the Lord of Greed in the Vault. All players get the same hall, the same run conditions and artifacts each week. Points, enemy kills and times are recorded for your personal best. Torment Shards are excluded from these challenges.

The new Kill Count Mode optionally replaces the fixed time limit with a goal of 12,000 to 30,000 defeated enemies, depending on the area. It is unlocked by completing the Berserker I task of the respective hall. For The Boglands, this mode is already the default, while the timed mode is unlocked separately. The Compendium also shows long-term statistics on damage, enemies, playtime and the heroes used.
