What is Happy Wheels?

Happy Wheels is a side-scrolling, physics-based sandbox game by Jim Bonacci. Instead of a classic racing game, the focus is on short obstacle courses, exaggerated ragdoll physics and community-made levels. Characters such as Segway Guy, Wheelchair Guy or Irresponsible Dad each come with their own vehicles and quirks.

The core of the game has for years been closely tied to its community: a huge archive of user-generated levels grew on Totaljerkface; the Steam version carries this approach forward and integrates the level browser directly.

Release

Happy Wheels was originally released in 2010 as a browser game. On Dec 28, 2020, Jim Bonacci published the JavaScript/HTML5 version, which replaced the Flash client and carried on the existing database of users, levels and replays.

On Sept 21, 2026, the Steam version followed. It is not meant as a remake, but brings the existing Happy Wheels universe into an ad-free desktop client with Steam features and access to the grown community archive.

Gameplay

The game combines simple movement with deliberately unpredictable physics: players try to survive a course with different characters and vehicles, while traps, jumps and moving obstacles push the ragdoll simulation to its limits. The exaggerated cartoon violence is part of its dark humor.

The Steam version adds controller support, achievements and statistics, as well as the option to download levels for offline play. Old Happy Wheels accounts can be linked to Steam.

More than five million community levels and a built-in editor

The level editor is not an add-on mode, but a core part of Happy Wheels. The Steam version promotes more than five million user-generated levels that can be searched, sorted and played via the built-in level browser. New levels continue to appear daily.

For the Steam launch, a date picker was also added, making it possible to browse older community levels in a targeted way. This makes the archive, which has grown over many years, permanently easier to access.

What the Steam version permanently adds

The Steam edition is ad-free and adds Steam achievements, statistics, Steam Cloud, controller support, offline level downloads and the option to link existing Happy Wheels accounts to a Steam ID. The existing level browser and editor remain part of the core game.
