What is Heartworm?

Heartworm is a psychological survival horror game by solo developer Vincent Adinolfi and publisher DreadXP. At its center is Sam, who cannot come to terms with the death of her grandfather and finds clues online about a remote house said to make contact with the afterlife possible. The search for closeness becomes a journey through grief, memories and supernatural horror.

The game is a love letter to late-1990s survival horror and deliberately combines low-resolution 3D visuals with modern comfort options.

Gameplay

Heartworm combines fixed camera angles with third-person aiming over the shoulder. Sam explores surreal locations, solves classic puzzles and has only limited ways to defend herself against enemies. Her camera serves as the central weapon.

The controls can be played in a modern style or switched to classic tank controls. Pixelation and other retro effects can also be turned on. DreadXP gives around four to six hours for one playthrough; multiple endings provide additional variations.
