Hela: of Mice & Magic

Hela: of Mice & Magic is a 3D adventure by Windup Games, in which a small mouse, the familiar of an ailing witch, travels through a fairytale world inspired by northern Sweden. Instead of classic combat, the focus is on exploration, environmental puzzles, collecting and crafting magical tools.

The open world combines forests, lakes, mountains and small settlements with tasks that arise from the surroundings. It is not just about helping the witch: the Mouse also supports other inhabitants, discovers hidden paths and gradually brings life back to the landscape.

Hela: of Mice & Magic releases on Dec 1, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. The PC version is offered via Steam and the Epic Games Store. On Xbox and PC, the adventure is also included in Game Pass at launch.

Alongside the digital versions, a limited Harmony Edition has been announced for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch 2. It does not change the game itself.

Confirmed are PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. Versions for PlayStation 4, Xbox One or the original Nintendo Switch have not been announced.

On PC, Hela appears via Steam and the Epic Games Store. The Xbox Series version supports Xbox Play Anywhere; Xbox and PC also get the game on launch day via Game Pass.

Hela can be played alone, locally in split-screen, or online with up to four players. The small mouse moves through the world with a versatile frog backpack: it helps with climbing, gliding and swinging, and turns many puzzles into small movement challenges.

A central progression system is Brewing & Remedies. Ingredients are gathered in the game world and then not simply combined in a menu. When brewing, players carry out individual steps themselves. The resulting Remedies serve as magical tools that open new paths, change movement options or help with environmental puzzles. This means places you already know can offer new possibilities later on.

The puzzles can still be fully solved solo. In co-op, several mice can experiment at the same time, gather ingredients and try out different solutions.

The Shade system lets you create magical copies of your own mouse in single-player. These can help when interacting with objects and solving puzzles. The developer confirms that the full adventure is meant to be accessible on your own as well.

For a small mouse, branches, rocks and everyday objects become large obstacles. The magical Froggy backpack helps you move through the landscape, collect resources and interact with objects. Climbing, gliding and physics-based objects are part of the puzzle design.

If you look for a new route, you don't always have to follow the intended path. A detour, a movable object or a later-acquired ability can also open up the environment in new ways.

A limited physical Harmony Edition has been announced for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch 2, alongside the digital base game. It includes the game, a digital soundtrack, a 48-page artbook, a double-sided poster with the map and stickers, in special packaging.

The Harmony Edition therefore offers collectibles and no additional playable chapter. According to the publisher, the release for PC and Xbox Series S is limited to digital versions.

Hela can be played in single-player mode, locally with two players in split-screen, or online with up to four people. During shared expeditions, players can tackle puzzles and tasks together in the game world. Steam also lists Remote Play Together for the PC version and the use of Epic Online Services for online features. Whether every console can play directly with every other platform is not confirmed.

The landscapes of Hela are based on northern Sweden: forests, calm lakes, mountain paths and wetlands form one connected world. For the tiny game characters, even ordinary objects become terrain obstacles or starting points for new paths.

While exploring, the mice meet animals and residents, for whom they can complete tasks. The core of the adventure is helping the sick witch and her surroundings, not fighting for territory. Hidden paths and small stories are meant to reward attentive exploration.

The PC store page lists German menus and subtitles. It also gives on-screen text in English, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Chinese, among others.

The voice-over information published so far does not fully match: Microids lists German, English and French as voice languages, while Steam's table does not mark consistent voice acting for these languages. A German dub for all platform versions is therefore not yet reliably confirmed.
