Senua’s journey to Helheim
Senua ventures into the underworld Helheim to come to terms with the loss of her beloved. Norse myths shape the locations, enemies and the threatening atmosphere. Instead of open role-playing areas, she faces a connected, story-driven path where external dangers and her perception overlap.

Combat system and enemies
In melee fights, Senua must block or dodge enemy attacks, find the right moment for counterattacks and use her movements deliberately. Encounters are part of the story and not a freely repeatable loot mode. A classic group control or a cooperative mode is not part of the game.

Perspective puzzles and rune symbols
Many obstacles can be overcome by moving Senua and lining up shapes in the environment with set symbols. The puzzles call for careful observation and tie architecture, lighting and viewpoint to progress through the story.

How Senua perceives the world
Senua experiences voices and altered perceptions that shape how she sees her surroundings. Ninja Theory developed the portrayal together with experts in neuroscience and people with experience of psychosis. The character’s mental experiences are part of the story and the staging, not merely an enemy ability.

Voices and spatial sound
Sound design is central to Hellblade: voices accompany Senua from different directions, comment on events and create closeness or distance. Binaural recordings enhance this effect especially over headphones. The sound is therefore not just background music, but shapes how the story is perceived.
