Gameplay

Each day alternates between supplying the group and dangerous routes through Walton. Individual characters search houses, shops and other parts of town for food, medicine, tools and weapons. Along the way they can sneak past zombies, fight or flee.

At home, the items you find need to be distributed sensibly. Injuries and exhaustion affect your next trips. If you use up all resources before a new shelter is reachable, you put the whole group at risk.

Walton City in Texas in the 1980s

Walton City is a fictional Texan coastal metropolis in 1980. A heatwave and economic problems shape daily life before the zombie epidemic lays waste to the streets. Exploration covers residential houses, industrial areas, shops and abandoned public buildings.

New locations can be a source of supplies, a refuge or a dangerous shortcut at the same time. Encounters and conditions change between runs.

Shelters and barricades

The group moves from one makeshift shelter to the next. Barricades provide safety but can't hold off zombie attacks forever. Inside, you can organize and improve workstations, supplies and facilities for survival.

The residents' skills and condition decide how tasks are divided. Over time, it may become necessary to give up the current refuge and secure a new building.

Food, equipment and crafting

Food, bandages and tools are vital. You can craft weapons and tools from collected materials. Food can spoil if it isn't used or preserved in time.

Traps, trading, and deciding which materials to hold back for later tasks are also part of supplies. Good equipment reduces risk, but it doesn't replace planning.

Sneaking and fighting zombies

Sneaking is often safer than an open confrontation. You move individual survivors sideways through rooms and streets, watch enemies and look for good routes past the undead.

When combat breaks out, melee weapons, firearms and crafted tools are at hand. The different zombie types and the risk of infection make direct confrontations harder. Some characters are better fighters than others.

Survivors, relationships and morale

Every person in the group has their own needs, strengths and relationships. Hunger, fatigue, wounds and mental strain affect survival chances. Decisions about scavenging, working and living together change how the characters feel about each other.

Friendships, conflicts and romances can develop. Morale depends on positive and negative experiences and has real consequences for living together. Taking in new people expands your options, but also increases the need for supplies.

Skill trees and character development

Survivors can improve their abilities by gaining experience. Their skill trees build on personal traits that affect, among other things, combat, supplies and exploration.

The group is therefore not made up of interchangeable units. If you rely on a certain person, you also have to consider their injuries and strain.

Escape routes and different endings

The goal is to escape Walton, not to endlessly hold a single base. Different escape plans lead to other locations and decisions. Among other things, the abandoned Pickett Stadium plays a role in a separate story route.

The routes you choose change the group's experiences and possible outcomes. The stories of individual characters shape which decisions are especially hard to make.

Custom starting conditions in scenario mode

Custom Scenarios mode lets you change starting conditions and game rules. This includes the initial survivors, shelters, supplies and experience, as well as factors such as event frequency and weapon durability.

This lets you start a new run with different conditions, instead of always using the same group and supply situation.

Difficulty and content filters

There are several difficulty levels and custom settings for how the game plays. Besides preset options, you can change certain survival conditions individually.

In the options, blood effects, nudity and depictions of suicide can be hidden. The game still deals with threatening situations, violence and tough decisions.

Single player instead of online co-op

Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days is a single-player game. You coordinate several survivors within a shared campaign, but you don't control an online group with other players.

The characters' relationships are part of the game system and should not be confused with cooperative multiplayer.
