What is Machinarium 2?

Machinarium 2 is the standalone sequel to the 2009 puzzle adventure by Amanita Design. After their joint escape from the city of Machinarium, the robots Josef and Berta look for a new place to live. The game remains a hand-drawn, wordlessly told single-player adventure, but shifts the focus to the teamwork of two controllable characters.

After a crash landing in the wilderness, they discover a hidden valley where two robot communities compete over a dwindling energy supply. The story is conveyed mainly through environments, animations, symbols and thought bubbles.

Platforms

Windows and macOS are confirmed as the PC platforms. Both Steam and GOG list the game for pre-order; GOG announces a DRM-free version. A native release for PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch has not been confirmed so far.

The storefronts list Machinarium 2 as a single-player title. Although two robots are controlled, no local co-op or online multiplayer is promised. The user interface is announced in German, among other languages.

Gameplay

In the second part you can switch between Josef and Berta at any time. Their abilities complement each other, so that certain obstacles can only be solved if both are used sensibly. This is a structural change from the first game, which focused on Josef, but according to the store it remains a single-player experience.

The world is understood as before through observation, interaction and pictorial hints. Conversations with other robots run through animated thought bubbles and symbols instead of written dialogue. The classic mouse pointer remains as a control option; with a gamepad, the characters can now be moved directly.

Elektrona and Oilton: The new valley

Instead of the city from the predecessor, Josef and Berta explore a landscape of cliffs and rusted machines. A monastery of the Elektrona robot group sits high above the valley, while the Oilton community lives in a city below. Both groups are suffering from dwindling energy. What lies behind the supply crisis and how the two characters can intervene remains part of the upcoming story.

Hand-drawn art, animation and music

For backgrounds, characters and architecture, Amanita Design again relies on fully hand-drawn art. According to the studio, the new landscapes also draw on classic Renaissance landscape paintings. The animations are meant to give the mechanical inhabitants personality without needing spoken dialogue.

Tomáš Dvořák aka Floex returns as composer. For Machinarium 2 he combines the acoustic and electronic sounds of the original with more orchestrated passages.

Controls and clarity

The puzzles are played with a mouse or controller. Amanita Design supports direct character control with a gamepad, while the classic mouse control of the point-and-click genre is retained. The story does without conventional dialogue text and conveys encounters through gestures and illustrated thought bubbles.

Steam also offers the option to save at any time as an accessibility feature. The announced language versions mainly cover the user interface and accompanying text, not a voiced dialogue story.

Game series

The Czech studio Amanita Design is responsible for development and publishing. The predecessor Machinarium was released in 2009 and told of Josef's rescue journey through a mechanical city. Machinarium 2 continues this character constellation after their escape and opens up a new location, without being a re-telling of the previous story.

Several members of the original team return, including game director Jakub Dvorský, designer Adolf Lachman, animator Václav Blín and composer Tomáš Dvořák (Floex).
