Maneater

Maneater is a single-player action RPG in which you control a bull shark. As a juvenile, you start in the waters of the American Gulf Coast, hunt prey and grow into a dangerous predator. The game combines exploring an open underwater world with combat, abilities and a satirical story.

Maneater came out on May 22, 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The Xbox Series version followed on Nov 10, 2020, and the PlayStation 5 version in Europe on Nov 19, 2020. The game came out for Nintendo Switch on May 25, 2021. Since Dec 15, 2025, versions for iOS and Android are also available.

Maneater has been released for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. The native versions for PS5 and Xbox Series offer a technically reworked display compared with their predecessors.

On PC, the game first launched on the Epic Games Store and on Steam on May 25, 2021.

You explore waters, eat fish and other animals, attack people and fight off larger predators. Through combat and collecting nutrients, you unlock new options for your shark. The world can be roamed freely between story missions.

The major expansion Maneater: Truth Quest came out on Aug 31, 2021. It takes you to Plover Island and continues the shark's story. New dangers and further evolutions for your predator take center stage. The expansion requires the base game.

The Apex Edition combines Maneater with Truth Quest on supported platforms. It is not a standalone sequel.

For the Windows version, Steam lists these minimum requirements: Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i5-5300U, 8 GB RAM, Intel HD 5500 graphics, DirectX 11 and 20 GB of free storage. Recommended specs include a Core i7-3770 or Ryzen 5 1500X and a GeForce GTX 970 or Radeon R9 390.

The story begins with a young bull shark who loses his mother and has to hold his own against the fisherman Scaly Pete. The events are presented like a biting nature documentary. The narrator Trip Westhaven, voiced by Chris Parnell in the English original version, comments on the hunt and the events on the coast.

The game world consists of seven large regions. It ranges from murky swamps and rivers through industrial ports and beaches to the open sea. Each environment brings different prey, enemies and discoveries.

In combat you attack prey with your jaws, speed up your shark and dodge attacks. Besides other sea predators, armed hunters pose a growing danger. As your shark grows stronger, it can also handle tougher encounters.

Maneater rewards hunting and exploring with nutrients and equipment finds, which make your shark grow and unlock new evolutions. These evolutions can change various traits in combat and movement.

Attacks on people increase the pressure from human hunters. The fights range from armed enemies on the coast to more dangerous pursuers in boats. These battles complement hunting wild animals.

Maneater's waters have a day-night cycle. This changes the atmosphere between the swampy bays, coastal towns and open sea areas, while you can revisit the same regions again and again.

The native versions for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S came out in November 2020. They support 4K, HDR and up to 60 frames per second, plus improved lighting effects. On PS5, the haptic feedback of the DualSense controller is added.

The Switch version was released on May 25, 2021. It brings the shark adventure to Nintendo's hybrid console. The Truth Quest expansion is not part of this release.

The mobile versions were released on Dec 15, 2025. HandyGames has brought the full story with the seven regions, the battles and the progression system to smartphones. The controls are adapted for touchscreens.

Maneater is a single-player game. You steer your shark alone through the story and the open underwater world. A shared co-op or competitive multiplayer mode is not part of the main game.

The PC version offers German menus, subtitles and voice-over. Steam lists 14 languages for the user interface in total. Voice roles are offered in German, English, Portuguese, Russian and Latin American Spanish, among others.
