What is Minecraft Dungeons?

Minecraft Dungeons is a standalone action RPG in the Minecraft universe that focuses on exploring dungeons, fast combat and collecting loot. Instead of mining blocks or building houses, players work through completed missions, defeat groups of monsters and upgrade their gear.

The plot revolves around the Arch-Illager, who oppresses villagers and turns hostile creatures against the heroes. The adventure can be played alone or together with up to three other people. It belongs to the Minecraft world but is not a game mode of classic Minecraft.

Release

The base game was released on May 26, 2020 for Windows PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. The Steam release followed on Sep 22, 2021 as an additional PC distribution channel. The Xbox Series consoles received an optimization tailored to their hardware on Feb 24, 2021 as part of an update.

In 2021, the story of the Arch-Illager was concluded with Echoing Void. In 2023, Mojang stated that version 1.17 was the last content update and that no new features or content were planned. This ends active development, but not automatically the playability of the released title.

Platforms

Minecraft Dungeons was released on Windows PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. PC players can get it through Steam, among others. The Xbox Series consoles are supported with a version optimized in 2021. This optimization should not be equated with a separate console version originally released in 2020.

For playing together across platforms, the Microsoft account link is relevant. A native Nintendo Switch 2 or PlayStation 5 release should not be inferred from backward compatibility or cross-device play alone.

Gameplay

Each mission combines carefully designed goals with changing routes, enemies and treasure finds. Instead of a rigid class system, melee weapons, ranged weapons, armor, artifacts and enchantments determine how the character fights. Gear can boost direct attacks, control groups of enemies or support a defensive approach.

Progress comes mainly from new gear and rising challenges. Already known missions are worth replaying when better loot or a different build is sought. Building, crafting as in sandbox Minecraft and freely placeable blocks are not core mechanics.

DLCs and expansions

Six paid expansions add to the adventure world: Jungle Awakens leads into overgrown jungle areas, Creeping Winter into icy regions, Howling Peaks into mountain landscapes and Flames of the Nether into the Nether. Hidden Depths adds underwater locations to the game. With Echoing Void, the story reaches the End and concludes the narrative around the Orb of Dominance.

The Ultimate Edition includes the base game and all six story DLCs. The Ultimate DLC Bundle, by contrast, is aimed at owners of the base game and includes the six expansions without selling the base product again. Cosmetic Adventure Passes are separate additional content.

Playing together: couch co-op and crossplay

Up to four players can play local co-op or online adventures. The game is designed for known teammates and invitations, not open matchmaking with strangers. In online mode, the challenge grows with the number of participants.

Since a free update on Nov 17, 2020, crossplay has been possible between supported Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox and Windows versions. On Switch and PlayStation, the game must be linked to a Microsoft account for this. Depending on the console platform, a separate online service may be required.

Transferring game progress between devices

Since May 2021, characters can be uploaded and downloaded via Cloud Saves. This means the same hero can be used on several supported platforms, as long as players sign in with the same Microsoft account.

The process is not simply invisible real-time syncing: heroes must be uploaded via the relevant menus and downloaded again on another device. Mojang says there are up to 20 saved hero slots per account.

The Tower as a standalone challenge

The Tower adds consecutive combat floors to the regular missions. On the way up, players choose new gear, armor and artifacts and face changing enemies as well as bosses. Building a usable set during a Tower run differs from progressing with a permanently equipped hero.

The Tower was introduced with Cloudy Climb. Later, shared Tower play was added. Changing Tower setups create different enemy and gear combinations, without turning the mode into a separate game.

Seasonal Adventures and cosmetic progression

With the free Seasonal Adventures, Minecraft Dungeons gained an additional progression system. Collected Adventure Points unlock rewards such as skins, capes, emotes and pets. Optional Premium tracks add cosmetic items, not new story chapters.

The three permanently added season themes are Cloudy Climb, Luminous Night and Fauna Faire. They brought the Tower, new reward systems and additional co-op features, among other things. The former season releases are part of product development, not yearly re-releases of the game.

What the end of development means

In 2023, Mojang explicitly announced that no new features or content were planned for Minecraft Dungeons after Update 1.17. However, the post at the time still promised playable adventures, the Tower and existing challenges.

For newcomers, what matters is that the base game, the six story DLCs and the major existing systems make up the completed content. Promised future content or new console versions should not be inferred from the ongoing product page.

Development and distribution

Mojang Studios and Double Eleven are listed as developers on the official Steam page, and Xbox Game Studios as publisher. Dungeons uses the characters and visual style of Minecraft, but instead of sandbox experiments it relies on a standalone action RPG gameplay loop.

The release began in 2020 outside Steam. Since September 2021, the PC version has also been distributed through Valve. The 2026 sequel is offered as a separate game and does not replace the original missions or the expansions bought for the first part.

Game series

Minecraft Dungeons uses locations and creatures from the Minecraft world, but tells its own dungeon crawler story without the building and survival mechanics of the main game. The six expansions still belong to the first Dungeons.

Minecraft Dungeons II is a standalone sequel and not a seventh expansion. It continues the equipment-based combat, but also adds, among other things, a connected world structure and the dimension The Sift.
