What is Moonlighter?

Moonlighter combines action RPG and roguelite dungeons with shop management. You take on the role of Will, who runs a shop in the village of Rynoka and, as an adventurer, travels through the gates to foreign dimensions.

Loot from battles is either sold in the shop or needed for crafting and new equipment. The shop's commercial success therefore also determines how well the next expeditions can be prepared.

Gameplay

A Moonlighter run unfolds through the combination of two tasks. In the dungeons, players fight monsters and collect artefacts. Back in the village, they offer these in their own shop and invest the proceeds in their equipment and the development of Rynoka.

As a result, the decision of when to end an expedition feeds into the shop economy. The number of enemies defeated is not the only factor in progress; how you manage inventory space and item value matters too.

System requirements

The original Windows minimum requirements list an Intel Core 2 Quad at 2.7 GHz or AMD Phenom II X4 at 3 GHz, 4 GB RAM, and a GeForce GTX 260 or Radeon HD 5770 with 1 GB graphics memory. Steam lists 4 GB of storage space as required.

An Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 660 are recommended. Since Steam now requires newer Windows versions, historical OS information should not be understood as current client support.

The shop in Rynoka

Will displays goods on the sales tables and sets their prices. Other tasks include managing the gold, expanding the shop and later hiring assistants. Not every visitor is a paying customer. The game also includes thieves, against whom valuable goods must be protected.

Trading is directly tied to the dungeon finds. Some items can be sold, while others are needed to craft or upgrade equipment.

The gates and the dungeons

The gates around Rynoka connect the village to foreign dimensions. Their dungeons are explored repeatedly and contain different enemies, bosses and materials. Every expedition can unfold differently. The roguelite concept therefore involves weighing further exploration against turning back in time.

The limited inventory prevents all the loot found from being carried at once. What you take with you affects your options on the next visit to the shop.

Combat, weapons and crafting

The combat system requires recognising enemy movement patterns, good timing and correct positioning. Will can use different weapons and adapt his fighting style. Crafting and enchanting let you make new armour and weapons or upgrade existing equipment.

Materials from the dungeons are useful beyond direct sale. How they are used determines how well Will is prepared for tougher enemies.

The trading village of Rynoka

The village was built near the mysterious gates so adventurers can sell their finds and rest. Will lives there as a shop owner and helps get the local economy running again.

Additional merchants and services are added gradually. These include options to have equipment crafted and enchanted. The growing town thus supports long-term character development.

Loot and inventory

Moonlighter limits the space for collected artefacts. Players therefore have to weigh which items to keep on a dungeon trip and bring back to Rynoka. The finds can be sold in the shop or used to craft new equipment.
