What is Muv-Luv Alternative?

Muv-Luv Alternative is a science fiction visual novel about Takeru Shirogane and humanity's fight for survival against the alien BETA. The story picks up directly from Muv-Luv Unlimited and concludes the core Muv-Luv trilogy. At its centre are a second chance, a military research mission and the question of what sacrifices a threatened world demands.

The story is conveyed mainly through illustrated scenes, dialogue, Japanese voice acting and long narrative passages. Despite the combat mechs, it is not a real-time action game.

Gameplay

As a visual novel, Muv-Luv Alternative tells a large story through text, dialogue, character images and staged scenes. Players read the story, follow conversations and experience the military operations from Takeru's perspective. The major battles are narrated and staged, not fought as freely controllable mech combat.

According to Steam, the PC version offers around 50 to 70 hours of content. Saving and resuming are central to the reading experience.

DLCs and expansions

On Steam, separately available digital companion works are offered, including Muv-Luv Alternative CODEX and Integral Works, as well as several editions of Muv-Luv Regenerative. These are mostly books, background material or music, and not additional campaigns for the main game.

Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse tells a different story in the same universe and is a standalone game.

Takeru's second chance

Takeru Shirogane has already seen the defence of Earth against the BETA fail. When he wakes again at an earlier stage of the war, he remembers the looming end. He tries to reach Professor Yūko Kōzuki and to change the fate of the military project Alternative IV.

The story links the fight for survival with questions of loyalty, responsibility and the consequences of scientific decisions. If you don't know the twists of Unlimited yet, you should play the backstory first.

An Earth at war with the BETA

In the world of Muv-Luv, the BETA have taken control of large parts of the Earth. Armies and international organisations are trying to defend the remaining territories. Alongside attacks by the alien enemy, political interests, scarce resources and the strategy of the United Nations shape the conflict.

The story moves between a personal perspective and the far-reaching consequences of military decisions.

Tactical Surface Fighters

Humanity deploys humanoid combat machines known as Tactical Surface Fighters. They define the military look of the series and play a central role in the plot of the missions. Muv-Luv Alternative shows this technology mainly in illustrations and dramatic scenes.

Characters and relationships

Takeru's bonds with his comrades drive the story. Familiar characters from earlier parts meet him along the way, often under much harsher conditions. Above all, his work with Yūko Kōzuki and the soldiers of his unit shapes his attempts to change the course of the war.

The backstory from Muv-Luv and Muv-Luv Unlimited gives many of these relationships their full weight.
