What is Port Royale 4?

Port Royale 4 is a trading and city-building simulation by Gaming Minds Studios. In the 17th-century Caribbean, you organise convoys, build production and ports, and develop trade routes between around 60 cities.

The single-player game combines four campaigns with a free mode. Trade and city building are joined by political missions, pirates and, for the first time in the series, turn-based naval battles.

Gameplay

Port Royale 4 revolves around the interplay of goods production and transport. You plan convoy routes, sell goods to cities that need them and expand ports with facilities that make new goods. A transport route only pays off when purchasing, travel time, supply and sales all fit together.

For your work, you receive tasks from the viceroy. Reputation unlocks new buildings, concessions and ships. If you come into conflict with other colonial powers, you must also protect your trade routes from enemy fleets.

DLCs and expansions

The Buccaneers expansion makes piracy the core of an alternative game in free play. You set up privateer fleets, take over foreign ships, capture cities and follow additional missions. The add-on came out on PC in May 2021 and on Nintendo Switch in September 2021.

The Extended Edition, by contrast, mainly adds extra decorations such as lighthouses and park blueprints. An edition and a content expansion are different products. Access to additional content depends on the specific platform version.

Trade routes and goods production

Around 60 cities in the Caribbean form the trade network. The economic system simulates 25 types of goods and requires raw materials and processed products to reach the right places. Convoys can travel set trade routes on their own.

A profitable route is not necessarily the shortest connection between two ports. Stormy waters, cliffs and shallows affect travel, while production and demand determine when transport capacity is worth using. Trade therefore stays closely tied to building your own ports.

City development and colonial politics

Building up your ports involves around 50 different building types, including 25 production facilities. Placement matters: neighboring buildings can affect productivity and well-being. This creates a link between urban infrastructure and supply by trade convoys.

Working for the colonial power you have chosen raises your political standing. This unlocks concessions for new ship types, construction projects and further expansion. The game depicts a strategic version of the Caribbean colonial economy, not a comprehensive historical reconstruction of its social conditions.

Tactical naval battles with up to eight ships per side

If you want to protect convoys or threaten enemy ports, you rely on armed fleets. For the first time in the Port Royale series, naval battles are fought turn-based. Up to eight ships per side can meet in battle.

Additional captain's maneuvers expand the tactical options. Choosing ships, their position and careful turn order matter, because a lost battle also weakens the economic security of the trade route behind it.

Four campaigns or free play

Four extensive campaigns focus in turn on Spain, England, France and the Netherlands. They set goals for trade, economy and growing power. Free play largely breaks away from this path and leaves room for your own trade strategies and different starting situations.

This is a single-player simulation. The challenge comes mainly from interlocking production chains, trade routes and expansion, not from a competitive multiplayer mode.

Switch version and next-gen improvements

On Nintendo Switch, Port Royale 4 can be played in handheld, tabletop and TV mode. According to Nintendo, the port was developed by Independent Arts Software.

Technical improvements were made for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Kalypso mentions revised lighting and weather simulation and 4K output on PS5 and Series X, with 1080p on Series S. The cross-gen save that was advertised at the time applies to switching within the PlayStation or Xbox family and is not a promise of cross-platform save files.
