What is Rain World?

Rain World is a 2D survival platformer by Videocult. You play as a Slugcat that is separated from its family after a flood and searches the ruins of an ancient civilization for food, shelter and a way through a hostile world.

The game combines precise platforming with survival mechanics. Rather than treating enemies as fixed obstacles, a large part of the wildlife moves through the regions as its own predator-prey system. Observation, movement, hiding and timing therefore matter more than raw combat strength.

Release

9 years agoSource: Steam

Rain World was originally released on March 28, 2017. Since then, the game has been brought to more consoles and expanded over the long term through two major expansions. Akupara Games took over publishing of the game in 2022; Videocult remained the main developer of the Rain World series.

Downpour followed as a large expansion in 2023. The Watcher first came out on PC in 2025 and later that same year on PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and Xbox. A physical Anthology bundling the base game, Downpour and The Watcher has also been announced for Nintendo Switch 2; Serenity Forge currently gives Feb 18, 2027 as the expected shipping date for pre-orders.

Gameplay

Every cycle revolves around food, exploration and a safe shelter before the rain sets in. According to Akupara, the base game includes more than 1,600 rooms across twelve regions. Predators and prey react to their surroundings with their own AI, making routes and encounters less predictable than in classic platformers.

Alongside the campaign, the base game offers a local Arena mode for up to four players. The different Slugcat variants also change pace and risk: Monk is aimed at a more accessible start, Hunter at a more aggressive and demanding game.

The dynamic ecosystem

A core feature of Rain World is the behavior of its creatures. Enemies are not just obstacles on a fixed route: animals hunt, flee and react to each other. This means situations can change without the player having triggered them directly. This system shapes both stealth and the choice of safe routes, and makes observation a central part of the game.
