What is Redout 2?

Redout 2 is a futuristic anti-gravity racing game by 34BigThings. The vehicles hover over extreme race courses whose loops, slopes and jumps demand precise control. The game focuses on speed and technical vehicle control rather than fighting other pilots.

As a standalone sequel to Redout, it offers a long career, online races and extensive customization options for hovercraft. The dystopian future serves as the racing backdrop, not as a story-driven campaign.

Release

4 years agoSource: Steam

Redout 2 was released on June 16, 2022 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The standalone Nintendo Switch version followed on July 19, 2022. The later physical Switch edition is not an additional platform release.

Xbox supports Smart Delivery for Xbox One and Series. The PlayStation Store explicitly lists PS4 and PS5. These differences matter more for assigning native game products than the mere playability of an older version on newer hardware.

Platforms

Native releases exist for Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series. The PC version is offered via Steam, among others. On Xbox, cross-generation access through Smart Delivery is listed.

Running a Switch version on Switch 2 would not automatically be a separate native Switch 2 release. No separate Redout 2 product is confirmed for this new platform in the Nintendo product information checked.

Gameplay

The focus is on hitting the right racing line, a suitable speed through corners, and controlling the hovering vehicle over jumps and loops. Many sections are three-dimensionally twisted. If you only accelerate, you quickly lose time or control on the more demanding courses.

The accessible arcade basics combine with a steep learning curve: only the interplay of handling, track knowledge and clean maneuvers makes fast laps possible.

DLCs and expansions

The Summer Pack adds the area Caribbean Dam: three tracks plus a boss course, all raceable in both directions, as well as 29 new career events and cosmetic vehicle parts. The Winter Pack leads to the Terror Rupes on Mercury. There too, three tracks and a boss course expand the race calendar, along with 28 career events and further decorations.

The Season Pass covers both major track packs. The Deluxe Edition includes the base game as well as the Season Pass; the pass alone does not replace the base game. The console store pages also explain that new DLC tracks may be usable in multiplayer lobbies if only the host owns the respective expansion.

36 tracks with reversed direction

The base game includes 36 tracks that can also be raced in reverse. This changes approach points, braking points and the timing of tricky passages, even when the layout is known. Additional race complexes from the two major expansions are not part of these original courses.

The race environments combine towering track sections, tunnels and jumps. The spatial track design makes memorizing corners an important part of progress.

Solo career and event types

The extensive career contains hundreds of events, including classic races, time trials, elimination races and so-called boss races. Different events require either consistent best times or beating a field of drivers.

Apart from the structured career, you can race individual courses to practice and improve your driving technique. A photo mode is used to capture race scenes.

Online races: different player limits

Online lobbies differ depending on the platform. PC and Xbox list up to twelve players, while the official figures for PS4, PS5 and Nintendo Switch are up to six. The larger PC lobby is therefore not a universal feature of all versions.

Online races on PlayStation require PS Plus; Nintendo refers to a corresponding Nintendo Switch Online membership. The Xbox Store lists cross-generation play on Xbox Network. Shared lobbies across all platforms are not confirmed by these sources.

Twelve chassis and vehicle customization

For the hovering race vehicles there are twelve chassis to choose from. Their handling can be changed through engines, stabilizers, wings, spoilers, rudders and other vehicle components. Vehicle tuning is a lasting system alongside the purely visual customization.

Colors, paints and other cosmetic parts mainly affect the look. A dedicated photo mode lets you capture the futuristic race machines on the tracks.

Electronic soundtrack and racing rhythm

The electronic music is meant to accompany the high speeds. Artists named on the official game page include Giorgio Moroder, Zardonic and Dance with the Dead. The sound design uses a mix that, according to the developer, reacts to race events.

The separately sold Original Soundtrack should be distinguished from the track expansions. It does not turn Redout 2 into a different base game and is not a third major race track expansion.

Deluxe, Ultimate and add-on packs

Alongside the standard version there is the Deluxe Edition with base game and Season Pass. Steam also lists an Ultimate Edition, which includes the Original Soundtrack. These packs bundle content but are not additional native platforms and should not be confused with individual DLC products.

Smaller cosmetic content such as a Veloce paint job is also part of the product range. For the actual race track system, Summer Pack and Winter Pack are the most relevant.
