What is Roboquest?

Roboquest is a fast first-person shooter with roguelite progression. In a future controlled by robots, you steer a Guardian through changing areas, collect new weapons and combine upgrades for your current run. After a defeat you start again, but keep unlocked progress at the base camp.

The game works alone or together with a second person. The shootouts demand a lot of movement, quick decisions and deliberate use of class abilities.

Platforms

Roboquest is available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. On PC, the game is available through Steam and Epic Games Store, among others. The Xbox versions support the well-known fast-paced gameplay, as do the later PlayStation versions.

Roboquest VR is a separately developed virtual reality game. It is not an additional VR mode of the original shooter and has its own platform versions.

Gameplay

Each run leads through several combat zones with robotic enemies, branching paths and powerful bosses. You switch between ranged weapons, sprint and jump through the environment, and choose upgrades during the run that make your Guardian stronger or more agile.

The areas consist of a mix of prepared sections and randomly assembled parts. As a result, enemy encounters and routes between attempts change.

DLCs and expansions

For Roboquest there is a separately offered soundtrack and a digital artbook. Both complement the main game without being another playable base version.

Roboquest VR, by contrast, is a standalone adaptation for virtual reality with adjusted controls, movement and weapon mechanics. This means the original Roboquest cannot automatically be played in VR.

Guardian, Max and the world in 2700

In 2700, the remaining humans live scattered across a barren desert landscape. The young scavenger Max discovers an old Guardian robot and reactivates it. Together they try to find out what power lies behind the hostile machines and how the future of humanity can be changed.

This story accompanies the battles without pushing the fast runs and the development of your Guardian into the background.

Fast movement is key

Roboquest relies on constant dodging, jumping and quick repositioning. If you stand still, enemy projectiles and rushing machines can easily corner you. Movement abilities help you find good attack angles and reach the next safe spot.

Shooting and movement are closely linked: your weapon choice and class abilities determine not only your damage, but also how aggressively you can play.

Guardian classes and abilities

Several Guardian classes offer different focuses. Some generate drone support, others use heavy weapons or abilities for especially fast attacks. During a run, you combine class bonuses with new upgrades and change the strengths of your character.

The permanently available Superbot also brought an unusual class that does not equip weapons in the classic way, but uses them through its own game mechanic.

Weapons and equipment

Roboquest offers rifles, shotguns, precision weapons and unusual technical devices. The weapons differ in range, fire rate and use case. Combined with the upgrades offered during a run, different combinations emerge.

The arsenal also includes a training area in the base camp. There you can get to know how individual weapons handle without the pressure of an ongoing battle.

Permanent upgrades in the base camp

After a failed run, you return to the base camp. Collected wrenches can be used there for permanent upgrades, new options and extra game settings. This creates long-term progress alongside the short-term weapon builds.

The next attempt starts again, but new unlocks and more experience with enemies open up further paths through the world.

Co-op for two and crossplay

Roboquest can be played solo or online in co-op with two players. Together you can fight the enemy robots, support each other in difficult encounters and try out class combinations.

Crossplay is planned for the supported platforms. Roboquest VR is excluded: the standalone VR adaptation does not use the same cross-platform multiplayer mode as the classic Roboquest.

Endless mode and extra challenges

Endless mode adds a continuous sequence of shorter, increasingly difficult levels to the regular runs. Additional modifiers are added after sections, while two bosses appear at the same time at regular intervals.

The mode is part of the extended game content. Pausing and later resuming a solo run is also possible thanks to a save function at the end of a level.

Permanent content after launch

The Super expansion added the Superbot quest, the playable Superbot class and the Harmony Square area. The weapon arsenal and options in the base camp were also expanded after release.

This content permanently changes the available classes, equipment options and routes. It is not limited-time seasonal events.

Deserts, factories and futuristic cities

Missions lead through dry canyons, technical facilities and science fiction cities. Each environment puts different emphasis on obstacles, enemies and movement options. Secret paths and hidden rewards encourage exploration, even away from direct combat.

The bright colours and clearly recognisable robot shapes keep the battlefield readable despite the many projectiles.

Game series

Roboquest was developed by the French studio RyseUp Studios. Starbreeze supported the release on PC and consoles. The game combines a fast first-person shooter with roguelite mechanics and so differs from classic linear campaign shooters.

The VR adaptation released later was developed separately and forms a standalone gaming experience.
