What is Shadow of the Road?

Shadow of the Road is a narrative tactical RPG by Another Angle Games. In an alternate Japan in 1868, the world of samurai meets Yōkai, magic and steam-powered war machines. Unlike an action game, battles are decided turn by turn by a group you assemble yourself.

The group's mission is to protect a boy with unusual powers in the middle of a civil war. Dialogue choices, companion development and tactics in battles are meant to be connected.

Release

in 4 monthsSource: Steam

The newly announced release date for the PC full version is Mar 10, 2027. Publisher Owlcat Games and developer Another Angle Games postponed the launch previously planned for Nov 12, 2026. The new date is a plan, not a release that has already happened.

A free, standalone PC demo has been available on Steam since Jul 15, 2025. It offers an early look but does not replace the full version, which is not yet released.

Gameplay

Combat is turn-based and requires more than choosing the strongest attack. Character positions, the order of their actions and available abilities determine when a risky push is worthwhile and when a defensive decision makes more sense.

The companions bring different skills and backgrounds. According to the studio, their relationships and personal development also affect tactical options. The design combines classic group tactics with the narrative consequences of earlier decisions.

System requirements

Steam requires a 64-bit processor and a 64-bit operating system for the full version. Specific processor, graphics and memory values are currently not fully filled in there. Epic does give preliminary details for Windows, but these should not be taken as final technical minimum requirements without identical confirmed Steam data.

Before a hardware purchase decision, the current official information from the manufacturer or store is therefore decisive. The demo has its own technical product page.

Rōnin Satoru and Akira on a shogun's mission

The shogun's intelligence chief tasks the rōnin Satoru and Akira with protecting a boy with powers that are hard to control. On the journey, people with their own goals and loyalties join the group. Their bonds can grow stronger or break through decisions.

The story does not simply retell historical events. It weaves Japan's upheaval of the 19th century with supernatural forces, so war, family ties and loyalty conflicts also shape the narrative.

Japan 1868 between Yōkai and machines

The starting point is the year 1868, a fictional version of the conflict between the troops of the Tokugawa shogunate and the imperial side. In this world, samurai fight not only soldiers but also technical constructions and Yōkai.

The influence of a fictional British East Nippon Company adds industrial and imperial pressure to the historical conflict. Temples and traditional architecture stand alongside heavy steam-powered machines. The setting is explicitly alternate history, not a historical simulation.

Decisions change companions

The group consists of characters with their own interests, fears and personal stories. According to the developer, decisions can deepen friendships, destroy relationships or resolve earlier conflicts. Progression is therefore not just collecting experience points.

Even in combat, individual traits interact. This makes choosing and developing companions a longer-term system that combines story and tactical planning.

Samurai, steampunk war machines and Yōkai

The enemy side includes both human opponents and supernatural beings as well as mechanical foes. The contrast of swords, turn-based tactics and electric machine attacks is core to the setting.

Official gameplay scenes show combat from an elevated tactical perspective, with a displayed action order and different attack options. This alone does not yet say how all later enemy groups or difficulty levels in the full version will turn out.
