What is SMITE?

SMITE is a free team-based online battle game with characters from mythology. Unlike many classic MOBAs, players control their god directly from the third-person perspective. Teams fight over map areas and enemy objectives. Available characters come from different mythologies, including Zeus, Loki and Sun Wukong. The characters' abilities determine whether they attack better, protect allies or control opponents.

Platforms

SMITE has native versions for PC, Xbox One and PS4. On PS5, the PS4 version can be played through backward compatibility, but that is not a standalone PS5 release. The game also came out for Nintendo Switch, but that version was discontinued on May 1, 2025 and removed from the eShop. The Switch therefore only counts as part of the release history, no longer as a currently usable platform.

Gameplay

In SMITE, teams of gods compete against each other in arenas with different win conditions. Players move their character directly through the world, aim themselves and use several characteristic abilities. Positioning, coordination and how roles work together affect fights just as much as quick reactions. A match starts with comparatively limited options, while characters gather experience and items over the course of the game.

DLCs and expansions

SMITE has numerous skins and packs sold separately. They add cosmetic variants and other unlockable content to the base game. Some packs bundle several products without including their own campaign. When choosing an offer, check the supported platform and what it actually contains. The standalone sequel SMITE 2 is not extra content for the original.

Gods and their abilities

Playable characters come from several mythologies and have their own abilities. Zeus uses lightning, Loki relies on deception and ambushes, and Sun Wukong combines agility with shapeshifting. This means characters differ clearly in range, damage output and how they support their team. For choosing, it matters not only which character you like, but also the makeup of the whole team.

Conquest: map, lanes and objectives

Conquest is SMITE's classic strategic game mode. Two teams fight on a map with several lanes, enemy towers and neutral areas. Between the lanes lies the jungle with additional objectives. Anyone who only defeats opponents and neglects map control often misses important progress. The team must coordinate attack, defense and movement across the map.

Arena and Joust

Arena offers more direct group fights than the more strategic Conquest mode. The more compact battlefield brings the two teams together faster. Joust uses smaller teams and concentrates fights on fewer paths. The modes suit different playstyles because pace, group size and the importance of map control differ.

Roles and team composition

A successful team needs different roles. Some gods absorb a lot of damage or protect their allies, while others deal high damage from range or surprise individual targets. Anyone who only focuses on their own damage numbers overlooks the importance of control, map vision and the right moment for a joint attack.

Gear and progression during a match

Gods get stronger during a match. They gain experience, improve their abilities and buy items that support their playstyle. Choice of gear depends on both your own god and the opposing team. With the next match, progression starts again from the beginning. This rhythm is part of the basic principle of the MOBA genre.

Play for free and extra purchases

SMITE can be downloaded and played for free. In-game, additional cosmetic content and other packs are offered. The basic principle of team-based battles does not require buying the game. For additional offers, check whether they unlock a god, an appearance or other content. The available packs differ by platform.

Why is SMITE no longer available on Switch?

The Nintendo Switch version of SMITE was discontinued on May 1, 2025. Developers and publisher cited quality and performance problems with this version as the reason. The download disappeared from the Nintendo eShop, and the version can no longer be used for online matches. The date applies specifically to the Switch version, not automatically to the other platforms. There is therefore no longer a sensible current purchase option for Switch.

SMITE 2 as a standalone sequel

SMITE 2 is the standalone sequel to the original SMITE. It uses Unreal Engine 5 and builds on the concept of mythological team battles. The original and the sequel are separate games. Their platforms, extra content and releases should therefore not be confused with each other. A package for the original SMITE is not automatically a product for SMITE 2.

Language and online requirement

SMITE requires an internet connection because battles take place online against other players. The PlayStation version includes German on-screen text and English voice audio, among other things. The language options can vary by platform. You can follow the battles without fully understanding the spoken dialogue, but reading abilities and menus remains important for how you play.

Game series

SMITE was developed by Titan Forge Games and published by Hi-Rez Studios. The game turns gods and mythological figures into characters in a competitive online battle game. SMITE 2 builds on this idea but remains a separate product. The original Switch version, despite being discontinued, is part of the history of the first SMITE.
